There's a homeless guy living (as cliched as this sounds) in the woods behind the liquor store near my house. See him around a lot.

Not near my house, no. There are a bunch of homeless guys near my workplace since I work downtown.

One of them is incredibly annoying, he basically will follow you for blocks unless you empty your wallet for him or go into a building.

Not where I live, but 15 minutes north (downtown) there are a bunch.

Couple scammers stand at the exits of the highway begging for money but they have been proven on Facebook to not be homeless and actually have ok lives.

Annoying beggars at every major intersection. They get angry when you hand them a resource card for homeless shelters, soup kitchens, employment assistance, drug treatment. As some of them have told me, "I can get $200 a day 'flying cardboard' on the street to buy coke. I can't get a job that pays that."

Yep and theyre sadly all on drugs. They spend all day panhandling and then they go eat at Panera bread for whatever reason.

One of the local shelters is publicly pleading with people to not give them money because they keep dying of overdoses.

Homeless people like being patronized by people who feel superior to them about as much as non-homeless people like it? I'm shocked! Shocked!

Used to let a homeless guy crash in my apartment during the winter many years ago. Even left the door unlocked and let him come and go as he pleased, including when I wasn't at home. Only rule I set for him was to keep out of my bedroom, which he eventually broke, and I stopped allowing him over when I wasn't home.

Wouldn't have someone stay these days. If it was just me I would, but I have kids now. I guess I'm okay with potentially being murdered in my sleep, but draw the line at endangering my kids.

Not by me (in the suburbs).

My mom lives in the suburbs as well, and she takes a train to the city for work. There is a homeless guy who always sleeps near the train station there, as it is indoors and provides some shelter. Apparently he is on speaking terms with a decent number of people there, and they help him by bringing him things like bagels or leftovers.

I do pick up hitchhikers, but again less than I did before I'd had kids, and I'd never do it with the kids in the car.

And that homeless guy wasn't a total stranger. He used to frequent the liquor store I worked at to redeem bottles and cans for cash. He seemed to be sane at the very least, and his hygiene was okay considering.

Yes. One thing that sort of surprised me was seeing a tent near a freeway that had a tripod with a small solar panel near it which I imagine is for charging a laptop or phone battery. It's not something I would expect a homeless person to have.

I live in the country so no but if I drive 15 minutes to the nearest town we have homeless there standing at intersections holding signs and sometimes a dog. A bunch of them live under bridges and in homeless camps in the woods. They assault people, have drug/alcohol fueled arguments, steal and poop and vomit wherever.

The communities have fed them and clothed them but it is getting worse, not better.

That strikes me as fairly intelligent. Obviously its expensive, but a solar panel is still a lot cheaper than rent or a mortgage.

So it's patronizing to offer help, but compassionate to give money to feed their addiction (and incidentally fund drug-dealing gangs and drive-by shootings). Interesting logic.

Barring the occasional sign-holders at the intersections, there are almost no homeless people here, since the area where I live is full of Section 8 housing, but there are tons of addicts (and, by extension, drug-related deaths). They are responsible for most of the break-ins and theft around here.

There was a hippy kid who told me his name was "Rainbow", but he was pretty normal beyond that.

There was one time I picked up a dude, said he wanted to go to Boston from New Bedford. I was heading to Providence but said I'd take him north of the city to get him started.

Once he was in my car I could tell something was off. He kept opening and folding a newspaper, like he had a tic, and he kept talking about Tom Brady. There are plenty of Patriots fans around who won't shut the fuck up about Brady, but this was different.

He came across as being a bit slow, and I started to think maybe he shouldn't be out on his own. Reversed my decision to take him up the highway and dropped him at a McDonald's one exit away. I was thinking that if he was not completely sane or was supposed to be under someone's care, that maybe he's missing or whatever. Stopped short of calling the police, but always wondered if maybe I should have.
