Surprised I never saw a topic here about it

It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating

My sister had it until semi-recently so I know they've been consistently making it worse and worse, to the point that it apparently defeated its own premise. What's the latest?

My sister has it

I think the latest is that it's limited to 3 movies a month? Which I mean guess is still a deal but considering what it used to be, lol

it's limited to 3 movies per month but you get $5 off every additional ticket

putting the 3 movie limit helped them remove the surge pricing and the limited availability of movies on opening weekend

it still sucks ass tho there's too many constrictions for me to want one anymore

I don't watch more than 3 movies a month, and if I did then it would still be a good deal.

I haven't personally been inconvenienced yet, so I don't mind the changes so far and will keep using it.

Moviepass probably won't be around too much longer. They haven't been able to cut any deals with any movie theatres so they pay full price for the tickets that their subscribers use. Part of their plan was to sell information about their subscribers but that doesn't seem to be going very well. Furthermore, movie theatre chains that are interested in a subscription service seem happy to roll out their own version rather than partner with Moviepass.

oh no, it's still hilarious.
the fact that they literally ran out of money and had to borrow 5 million while having no way to make money is the most mind boggling thing i've seen in a long time. there is no value in the company, they exist only to bleed money, it's such a bizarre and incompetent business that every pitfall is just another instance of "man, this company still exists."

AMC's plan is generally better and, for what moviepass has reduced themselves to, Sinemia is much better of an alternative. before it was at least a case of moviepass offering more but now Sinemia is 1) by a company that knows what they're doing, 2) has better finances (yearly subscription model no doubt helps), 3) lets you purchase in advance, 4) has family options, and 5) has cheaper options, and 6) has generally better options at the $10 price point.

the 3 movies a month limit is totally them realizing Sinemia's system is WAY better financially, though as a result they've basically made the alternative flat out superior. soon moviepass will probably go yearly subs too, assuming they don't die first.

well the latest latest isn't even just the rapid changes

as of the last like 2 weeks MoviePass just doesn't work nearly at all, with almost all showtimes missing aside from like mid-afternoon showings of Slender Man

people have been complaining to them so much about the app being totally unusable that they don't even bother responding to customer support messages anymore

The thing is though they've specifically avoided addressing the biggest issue publicly, focusing instead on their new 3/month plan and completely ignoring the issue of "nobody is able to use the damn thing"

I've had it about 9 months now, but since the last monthly payment about 2 weeks ago, I haven't been able to see a single movie

they charge more per month

Sinemia I've been hesitant about. They know what they're doing more but they're also considerably more expensive and ultimately gets you less movies

although anything >0 at this point is better than MoviePass

There are no AMC theaters ANYWHERE near me otherwise I'd jump on that

The thing that sucks is that I really love MoviePass. I've seen so many movies in theaters this last year, probably at least triple the amount I've ever seen in a given year before. It sucks to see it all suddenly falling apart like this

The reason you like MoviePass is the exact reason it is falling apart. They were letting people watch more movies than were covered by the price of the subscription. Way, way more. That's great for the consumer until the company falls apart because they have no plan to make money.

Sinemia's known a bit more in Europe and the way they make money is probably robbing from themselves. instead of moviepass billing monthly they bill you yearly, giving them more leeway to survive as that + same things moviepass probably used (investors, selling data, etc) is more in their favor. they also offered fewer movies but that's not the case anymore. right now they aren't more expensive than moviepass anymore: $4 for 1 movie, $8 for 2 movies, $10 for 2 movies but this includes premium stuff (imax, dobley, etc), and $14 for 3 movies (premium stuff). before the plan change they were known as a relative alternative to moviepass that sacrificed daily movies for advanced purchases and better theater options but now it's honestly a better value; 3 movies for $10 from a service that barely works or 2 movies for $8 (alternatively, 2 imax/dobley movies for $10) from a service that does and lets you purchase in advance.

the big thing about purchasing in advance: works on fathom events. so it actually works on the anime movies that have been popping up. this is something that neither moviepass nor AMC A-List offers.

I've given Moviepass about $120 and saw almost $700 worth of movies. I finally cancelled due to the latest bullshit (only two movies available per day) and switched to AMC A-List.

Moviepass was glorious while it lasted, but I knew its days were numbered. Hilarious watching them change their tactics every few days to slow the bleeding.

I mean I'd be willing to pay more per month for it, or have limited movies. AMC's $20/month for 3/week would still be plenty acceptable

See, this kind of stuff is weird to me. I think some of their restrictions are a bit too much now, like new, popular movies being blocked from being used, but stuff like not being able to watch more than one movie a day or the same movie more than once seems totally reasonable to me.

Like, you're getting a fucking steal already. Just because they say "Well, we're struggling now and we'd like to try and make it so people aren't taking total advantage of our product for our ridiculous low price" shouldn't mean they should get dumped on for such a thing. Why should you be allowed to watch more than one movie a day for the price of $10 overall? Why should you have to be allowed to see the same movie over and over again for $10? Why be so entitled to this subscription service where you admitted to having saved hundreds of dollars you otherwise would have spent watching movies?

And the absolute naivity by people to think for a second that once Movie Pass dies that AMC A-List won't be making a ton of restrictions on it is crazy. The only reason AMC A-List is exists is to kill Movie Pass.

Sorry, I think I was being a little unclear for the reason I cancelled. What made Moviepass useless to me is that now when I open up the app, it will literally only show me showings for Slender Man and The Spy Who Dumped Me -- literally no other movies show up now. I absolutely have no issues with only being able to see one movie a day or being limited to seeing each movie exactly once.

Since Moviepass is literally useless right now, AMC A-List is the only thing that comes close to what Moviepass was doing for me months ago. I have no well-founded opinion on the sustainability of A-List as it current stands. But just as my plan was to use Moviepass for as long as it's useful to me, I will do the same with A-List.

But at the bottom it said if you previously tried to cancel your subscription before this new policy it was not canceled and you will be billed

So keep an eye out if you guys canceled already
