Quote from an article this morning

"Multiple individuals connected to the team have indicated Mets patriarch Fred Wilpon, 81, is unlikely to hand the organizations reins to a young, purely analytics-driven GM with whom he would perhaps have difficulty connecting. The growing belief is Wilpon will look toward a more traditional baseball person . . . There is thought among team officials that perhaps the Mets became too analytics driven in recent seasons under Sandy Aldersons watch, and a veteran leader with a pure baseball background would help shift the organization toward the center."

WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING. WHY DOES MLB DO NOTHING ABOUT THE WILPONS.

"Difficulty connecting" means "can't control everything he does" btw.

https://twitter.com/kateefeldman/status/1027900866240696320

Thread. Please read.

"There is thought among team officials that perhaps the Mets became too analytics driven in recent seasons under Sandy Aldersons watch. They literally signed Jason Vargas to a two-year contract because of WINS. Show me where they were even slightly analytically driven at any point under Sandy Alderson's watch. You can't just say these things and make them be true. Not only is this blatantly false but there's no pushback. The next paragraph doesn't say "there is no evidence that this is actually true." I try not to go full media crit but just running blind quotes (even though we know who this is) with no analysis is a disservice to readers. There's a section farther down about how Mickey Callaway was an "out of the box hire" and he failed, so now they're going back inside the box which is the most predictable excuse in the world. As always, my favorite Sandy quote ("a walk and a dong" is second): "Exit velocity told us Eric Campbell was good until launch angle told us he was hitting balls really hard directly into the ground."

Ok so I saw that ridiculous pitch thrown at a batter and saw a lot of baseball fans defending it on twitter as part of the game. And it raises a few questions for me

Why is pitching at the batter acceptable but the batter charging the mound in retaliation not acceptable? If the pitcher wants to dish it out, then he should have to take it back

And why is pitching at the better acceptable but a bat flip is completely unacceptable? Pitching at the batter risks injury and is a sick move but a bat flip is completely harmless yet people cry about it so hard when it happens. That just seems ridiculous to me

I am completely clueless when it comes to Baseball. I only watch it in bars when theres no other sports on

Keith is an excellent broadcaster with great stories who has bad takes at times due to his old-schoolness. He was basically saying what wouldve happened when he was a player. Every person who played MLB in the 80s will feel this way. It's a dumb thing to think but it's not a big deal that he feels that way.

Also he said he didn't want Acuna to get hurt. He said the pitcher should've just him in the fanny or pitch inside, not tried to hurt him. You don't get to completely besmirch him because of a bad opinion he has.

If you intentionally hit a batter in an area that is not vulnerable - the butt, the thigh, the back then no one is making a big deal of this. Lke you might disagree, but like neon said. It's not acceptable at all, but it becomes much less not acceptable depending on A) where you hit him and B) why you hit him. The issue here is Urena clearly had intent to injure this guy for just being good at baseball.

What if the offending player had actually wronged someone on the other team in some more significant way, like getting into a physical altercation, or a fielder pegging a runner with a throw on purpose, or tackling a player and breaking his leg, or exactly what Urena just did? Is it still acceptable to throw at a player , in a less sensitive area, under these conditions? Maybe its not, but there might be a little more warrant to it.

also HEY LOLPHILLIES THE METS WON 24-4. The box score will show the phillies making 4 errors but there were at least 2 more misplays that didn't go down as errors.

Of course, you have many unearned runs that really should be earned too. Just because the would-be 3rd out would've ended the inning doesn't mean the home run that came later wouldn't have happened (imo, if there are 2 outs, and a player reaches base on error for what should be the 3rd out - that particular runner is unearned if he scores, but anyone subsequent should be earned).

Back in the day they'd just bean a guy and maybe they'd fight, that's just how the game was. It was a big bunch of alpha males competing. It's 'fine' because back then, you knew someone might drill you. And they'd have to see one of their guys hit. I'd say it's a bit different in the NL because if you drill a guy, you're gonna be up at the plate at some point and you'll face the music.

These days there's so much money involved for the players that I think the culture has changed. I'd say it's pretty crappy to go after a guy who is 18 and hasn't hit his big FA contract yet. Having a nobody pitcher on a crummy team that is just there to make Jeter feel important go after a guy who is gonna earn 9 figures is kinda rough.

Mattingly is a total filthbag but it's still almost weird that he of all people is going after guys for homering in consecutive games.

I generally agree with the whole of Keith Hernandez comments. It's a different era, and Keith seemed to clearly indicate he's from a different era with his POV compared to how players are today. He played in a "boys will be boys" era and it's a "millionaires will be millionaires" era. I don't agree with the specific "they should throw at him" point of view, maybe if only because Miami is a crap team and they shouldn't be throwing at anybody until they're a .500 team for a few years.

I'm a bit all over the place... I don't mind some beanball warz but if your problem is that your team sucks, don't take it out on someone else.

I personally do mind 'beanball warz', though I won't (usually) go out of my way to bash pitchers for throwing at a guy when it's clear and direct retaliation. I don't like it, but I'll keep quiet about it because they're still human beings.

But this 100% is not retaliation for anything. And I strongly feel that this case isn't justifiable or defensable regardless of era. "Boys will be boys" does not remotely justify throwing at somebody like Urena did, and I'm beyond disgusted with anybody who thinks it does.

ok. everyone is welcome to their opinion. just because you disagree is not grounds to call someone a horrible human being. Keith actually went on to explain that he didn't think Urena was trying to hit a sensitive part of his body on purpose. That Acuna raised his elbow. I still don't really agree with Keith, but I understand where he's coming from. He explained himself a little more:

And to follow up on that. I think that's fair. We're all saying it looked like he hit him on purpose, but can we really claim to know that? How do we know he wasn't just trying to pitch tight and inside, which is perfectly fine, and something you generally want to do to someone hitting as well as Acuna, and the pitch slid away more than he expected? And even if he was being more cavalier in not caring about hitting him, by cutting it close inside, we shouldn't really have any reason to think he was aiming for a certain part of his body. Like, maybe he was. But really, I think probably not.

After thinking about all this more, I don't really think it was as intentional as we all made it out to be. Still, I'd be pissed if I were a Braves fan, and as a baseball fan, I'm upset that it happened, and perhaps Urena needs to learn to control his pitches more before he risks pitching inside that much - but I think he just tried to brush him back, pitch close, and have a mindset of "if it hits him, it hits him" while not actively trying to hit him, just not caring if he did, figuring if it did, it probably wouldn't hurt him. He fucked up.

Also btw

Brandon Nimmo got hit in the knuckle (not intentionally) by the Phillies awful Ranger Suarez in the drubbing, and had to leave the game. I was pretty mad at him (clearly an accident) just because he may have killed the Mets sunshine. XRay was ok (that doesn't mean anything though, as we saw with d'Arnaud earlier, who had a clean X-Ray but not MRI).

It actually was ruled in play since it was off his hands and the bat and he was thrown out at first while he was crumpled on the ground in pain. Luckily he's ok?

Best part was he said:
I saw the ball go [toward third] and I was like, Ah, crud! And then I felt the pain and I was like, Oh, crud, it hit my finger! and went to the ground.

"Crud", That's so Nimmo.

Ugh, just got done reading the MLB article about Khris Davis with the A's and how he's about to hit 40 HRs three seasons in a row.

The reason I'm upset is because Milwaukee traded him away in the 2016 season. We also traded away Jean Segura (SS) and Scooter Gennett (2B), both all-stars this season. Our middle infield is a mess right now. We have a 3B playing second, a SS who can't hit, and we traded for a guy named Schoop who has does nothing but poison the lineup with lousy hitting and suspect defense.

The Brewers are just a few pieces away from making that championship run and we literally had them in the palm of our hands and just traded them away.

As much as I want to be wrong, I think we are about to witness very soon the annual swan dive the Brewers take from contender to pretender. Cardinals are right on our heels now. Ironically, they may be even more threatening than the Cubs. Alas, NFL season is right around the corner and the Packers look legit, as always.
