It never really made sense for the US, no. That's more a fit for nations like Cuba, China, and Canada. Well, plus the public option would have worked differently anyway from what you expected.

Democrats immediately dropped it to try and convince some Republicans to join in voting for the bill.
Then Republicans refused to anyway.

Democrats are spineless and really quick to seek defeat, you see. Hell, the "Blue wave" hasn't even occurred yet, if it will....and I already see headlines like, "Will Democrats even be able to change anything if they win control of Congress?"
It's just pathetic how readily they'll give up.

It was an independent who threatened to filibuster it, CT's own Joe Lieberman. (The former VP candidate who, after losing the primary contest to perennial jobber Ned Lamont, ran and won as an independent.)

And it's worth remembering that many democrats (including CT's own Zeus) never wanted that fucking public option in the first place.
