Okay, if anybody remembers my topic recently about my connection constantly dropping, I think I've narrowed it down to the wireless dongle. This shit is getting pretty bad, sometimes it'll go away like five times in five minutes.

Does anybody know any good ones at a reasonable price? There are way too many out there and there's a huge price range. I've just bought ones in the past for like $10 and they unsurprisingly aren't very good, but I don't know if I want to drop $60+ for something like this. I'd rather just figure out how to run an ethernet cable even though my setup isn't good for it now

Are you talking about a router? Spend good money on one if you're going to spend any at all. Not only will it up your connectivity and range, but speeds too. Wired connections are still your best bet and are super easy to do.

No I'm talking about an adapter for a desktop computer that doesn't have wifi built-in

what's the line of sight to the router/AP like? also look for sources of electromagnetic interference near both ends or in line of sight. for example, one poor connection I've worked on has a microwave in the middle of line of sight, and the connection tends to drop out when someone uses it.

I have one in my computer that was $50 or so. The couple of times I've shopped for a wifi adapter, I didn't see any reliable looking ones for cheaper than that so you might have to pay up. It's worth it for stable internet.

It's definitely a problem with the adapter, my laptop works fine on wifi from basically the same spot

so is this your desktop? make sure the dongle is on the side of the computer pointing towards the AP, so that the signal doesn't have to go through the machine, for example.

otherwise, probably a PCI adapter would be better than a USB one. something with an antenna. and then note that the antenna signal is cylindrical around the antenna, so don't point the end of the antenna at the AP, point the edge of the antenna at the AP (generally, point the antenna up). also you can buy a larger antenna for not much.

if you're going to drop a lot of money, you should maybe get a bridge rather than just an adapter. then mount it somewhere good, and run a network cable to your PC.

I got some off brand ones under $25 on Amazon that have an antenna that work a lot better than my old $50+ brand ones without an antenna.

I used to have one of those for my old desktop computer before the latter stopped working due to not having cleaned it for more than five years.

I've gone through 6 USB wifi adapters.

Pay more = get more. If one doesn't work right, buy another and cross your fingers. Keep them all handy.

A wired connection is always 10* better. You should start drilling now and save yourself the time.
