actually a good chunk of it is warcraft 3 and probably the obnoxious books that WoW relies way too much on for story but you know whatever.

The WoW story always feels so stupid when I read it

Like up until Warcraft 3 it seems fine

But WoW feels like a comic book without the setting to justify it so all this ridiculous shit is happening in a ridiculously small span of time for no reason and all the confrontations feel contrived

yes but Jaina's been developing slowly over the years in WoW. and in the new expansion she is a huge character for the plot, and her story arc is being focused on. she was slowly going from peace to war, and with BFA she now is fully officially in war mode. she went from being Gandhi to now being Hitler

well she has her reasons. the horde betrayed her. she helped them out and was even friends with their original warchief. and then they destroyed her town. and that did alot to help shove her towards being like her father. and now she's got this huge guilt in her heart over getting her dad killed cause she now believes she was wrong and her dad was right, and she believes she betrayed him for nothing. so she is trying to make it up to her father by taking up his old mission and finishing it. it will be interesting if her old friend Thrall shows up. but he's not the leader of the horde anymore.

I'm not quite sure how to describe it

WoW's story was perfect in vanilla where it all the major plot points involving major warcraft characters were sitting in the background being hinted at or referenced. it was just you going through a world that had a lot of shit going on that you happened to get caught up in in your own random adventures sometimes.

even then it was fine when it heavily relied on warcraft 3 stuff (BC, wrath, panda) but even then it didn't always work out (draenor) and any time they try to go outside that it's a complete crapshoot.

Jaina Proudmoore stopped her dad from killing a bunch of orcs. He ended up getting killed. Years went by and a bunch shit happened and now Jaina realizes her father was right to hate the horde and she has become her father

The video I posted is a hype video for the new expansion to get people excited and it shows Jaina singing on a boat and it's actually a really good song. It sounds cool. It's based on old sea shanties

And she is thinking about her dad

I'd be pissed at her for getting me killed for some bullshit that she was wrong about. If she had just shut the hell up and listened to me I'd still be alive and the whole war issue would have been settled sooner.

what is so different from this new story compared to the one in WC3? everyone loves WC3's story but makes fun of WoW's. even when WoW is continuing that story. like Wrath of the Lich King finished the story of Arthas. and this new expansion is continuing his legacy by way of the stories of 2 women he once knew. in a way, this is a direct sequel to WC3 because Arthas MADE Sylvanas and now this expansion is about the horrors she unleashes after her full transformation from what he did to her.

I'm fairly certain it has more to do with so many writers or other devs leaving Blizzard because of how Activision runs the show. I remember someone trying to tell me that Activision and Blizzard are still very much separate, somehow, and no, no they're not. Blizzard might still be its own studio, by some pseudo-miracle after some years, but Activision's policies and practices are ever present; the same ones that bled other companies dry that they had acquired over the years.

Acti-Bliz stopped reporting their active subs in WoD when the numbers hit as low as 5.5mil. From what I seem to recall the community has only been getting smaller at a steady rate, but not enough for Acti-Bliz to pull funding or stop making more expansions or patches.

This also does not account for bots or gold farmers (also thieves via account theft). Bear in mind that RMTs are fairly bad for that game compared to most others.

Another strong contender is FFXIV, for which the only reliable information we have is that there are 10mil accounts, obviously not all being active (and certainly not all being actual players). Squeenix also does not reveal precise numbers, as the only census site is fanmade and to be taken with a grain of salt. The RMTs are roughly as bad as in WoW; how successful they are may or may not indicate the actual level of activity.

Basically, as you sit there saying that WoW is still the highest sub MMO, there isn't enough information to back that up, and circumstantial evidence pointing to at least one other paid sub game being its match.

It IS bad enough that they're starting to talk about setting up official servers to run vanilla WoW in the state it was originally in pre-patches and updates, because a lot of players have complained about the current state of the game in the past, and they're getting kind of desperate to find ways to win back older players they've lost/rope in new players.

We'll know for sure that WoW has finally dropped below their acceptable threshold of subs once we start hearing rumors about them starting to design WoW2.

It's also less impressive when you realize that MMOs in general are kind of a dying genre, so being at the top of the heap is less worth boasting about when that heap's nowhere near as tall as it used to be.

And it gets arguably worse if you're willing to count "MMO-lite" games in the mix, because in that case games like Destiny and The Division absolutely beat out WoW in terms of active player-base at various times (even if Destiny is currently in the shitter and The Division is winding down as focus shifts to the sequel).

I keep hearing that when it's not dying. It's just transforming, or trying to do so, to meet the market. Unfortunately the current market is garbage, so that leaves MMOs with adapting to garbage means or atmosphere, with no real form of sustainability once people no longer have the money to afford cash shop items. If MMOs actually do die, it will be because no one who can afford games at all will be interested in playing because MMOs never interested them in the first place, and no one could find a feasible means to set MMOs on a new direction. By that point, video games in general by be conceived as "dead" because the market itself was allowed to fester.

Remember, MMOs came from MUDs, and MUDs could not be sustained for long because the market demanded change. The market needs change now.

Show me. And, when you do, do the MUDs follow the same restrictions and rules that the MUDs did in the 80s or so? This is just a guess, but any MUDs that do still exist and run fine have changed from that old system because the market demanded change. Am I right, or no? And again, what MUDs are doing fine?
