I was up at 5 am fretting over this.

Why is this option not on the poll?

It's the most logical and reasonable excuse for losing to someone on purpose. Helping your six year old build a little confidence and enjoy video games more at no real cost to yourself.

And yet, only dumb options that silly college kids would think of...losing to friends dates etc.

No one actually does that. It's just the psychological defense mechanism people resort to once they realize they've just been beaten by someone a fraction of their age, and they are suddenly confronted by the ice cold bite of their own mortality.

Yes my kid walking himself off the stage in Smash Brothers (even despite my pleading to him to throw some hits) had my number the entire time, I am glad though I have my defense mechanism in place to deal with such monstrous opponents.

Losing on purpose gives kids a false sense of accomplishment. Crush them under your boot, make them earn victory!

Yeah, I job to my kids often. I don't want them to get a sense of entitlement, so I give them a good game..but when I see an opportunity to make a mistake that will give them an advantage, I take it.

I tend to do this with board games too when I know I am playing with someone who really likes to win a game. If it makes it more fun for them to win, I will let them win. Hold onto a card in my hand for a turn or two longer than I should, something like that where it's not super obvious. I am far more interested in playing games with friends than winning games with friends.

I bet your kid goes to school and tells all his friends you suck at video games

Losing on purpose, no. Playing more casually, yes.

Oh man, I dunno how I'm going to do it when my daughter gets old enough to play video games. I'm like super competitive when it comes to games, like to the point where I almost lost some good friends over board games.
