I tend to keep multiple files for redundancy, it's rare that 2 similar files have become corrupt and it gives a chance to recover after updates go wrong.

Multiple save files for redundancy, which also occasionally double for going back to check different choices after finishing/acquiring trophies, or to "remember"/re-view major cut-scenes later on.

In the long ago ancient times, I used to just use a single save file per game, but then I got radically fucked in Final Fantasy VI (aka FF3 on the SNES), and basically had to start over, losing 16 hours of progress. So then I started staggering multiple tier save files.

These days, I usually have like 10 staggered saves per character in any given RPG, if the game allows me to. Though a frustrating number of RPGs seem to have hard caps on the number of save files you can have, which is kind of bullshit in the modern age of massive hard drive data storage.

One save file, but when I get to a point where I need to make a decision for the plot, I'll usually make a new save just in case it turns out to be a poor decision...

Single save for most games. If it's something like Dark Souls where I can easily do a lot of different character builds then I make a few different saves.

A mix of the second, third, and fourth choice. Multiple backups at different times for redundancy, save scumming, and to see different ending/choice results.

If there are numbered save slots, I usually make the first two or three save slots as temporary save file (kind of like having multiple quicksave, but i do it myself even if the game has a quicksave function). Then, make the rest of saves for permanent progress. This helps me from not having too many saves

1) Temporary
2) Temporary
3) Temporary
4) End of Ch 1
5) End of Ch 2
6) Fun boss/Cool cutscene/whatever
7) End of Ch 3
Etc....

Basically, poll option 3 lol

Usually if I am doing something stupid (typical for me and video games) I will branch my save files. Also if I am playing an old school adventure game I never save in the same slot twice. That is a recipe for starting over.

Any game like Skyrim gets a save every few minutes. Minimum entrance/exit to dungeons. Originally it was in case something glitches and I found out later. Now I Google every single place I enter and every single quest I start.

Unfortunately that's what has to be done since Bethesda is too lazy to make a gane that isn't broken even after seven years and tons of unofficial patches.

Many modern games don't give the option of saving to different slots. I often resort to backing up the profile in another folder.

Lately, one quicksave and a few autosaves. Sometimes one bugs up or saves during unfavorable times but it's never been much of an issue.

I get where you're coming from but I've never found it to be that bad-sure, we've all had a Bethesda game freak out at a bad time or suddenly found ourselves stuck in a rock etc. but you shouldn't let that take away from the fun of the game, just make a few extra saves and embrace the quirks lol
