I wonder who is actually going to see the movie. When it flops now, it doesn't matter how much representation you have, artistically or via talent, if no one sees it. And good luck getting more if it's not profitable.

I do kind of see the point though and maybe this wasn't an ideal scenario, personally I don't think you need to have a trans actor but maybe do what The Crying Game did and just cast a male. Having one of today's hottest female sex symbols playing a transwoman is an unrealistic representation.

The idea is that if you are going to make a movie with transgender people, why not use transgender people? If you use a non-trans woman to play a trans man... and a "bombshell" woman at that, it is the equivalent of saying that trans men are closer to women than who they identify as... men.

There's a great level of disrespect there and that is what pisses off the community.

Not allowing trans people to play trans roles is Hollywood refusing to allow new trans people, or trans people in general to become stars.

Trans actors for the most part only get to play trans characters, so when a high profile movie featuring a trans main character comes along and they give it to Scarlet Johansson...well, it's sort of like if they made a movie with a dwarf as the main character, but then gave that role to Dwayne Johnson. It's like, yeah, they could probably make it work with CGI but why not just give that role to an actual dwarf

Probably because there are not a lot of transgendered actors that are famous enough (A-listers) to generate the box office movement they need.

Sometimes movies can get away with unknown or little-known actors, but not all that often.

and part of the reason there aren't many trans A-listers is because roles like this are given to cis women instead of trans men
