7. Beat a game in a series you've already played some of

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

Amazon delayed my shipment of RDR2, so I figured I might as well complete the trilogy while I wait.

So, so much better than the second game, and better than the first game as well. The combat felt good here, the environments were much closer to the first in terms of quality, and there was actually a solid, fleshed out story that made sense.

13. Beat a WRPG

Planescape: Torment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geDxjxVddvo" data-time="

- I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's watching the first episode of the newest season late at night, maybe it's the song while talking to The Transcendant One, maybe it's the messaging and changing nature of a man, maybe it's the confrontation itself, but for some reason, that song which I have not heard in likely two or three years wormed its way into my head as soon as I went upon that roof and confronted my mortality. It seems fitting, too, for defeating my past and trying to set the planes right with my final actions as an immortal being, arriving in hell to carry on fighting.

Also, that final scene? Angel. "Let's get to work."

Seriously, a very good game. I was touched by the sheer amount of characterization, depth, and care taken for all but the most minor and generic of characters. The quests were complex enough to need time spent figuring them out, yet simple enough that they can be done quickly if you come across an answer to the solution right away or have confidence in your choices of dialogue. The worlds were varied enough though I would've liked to have spent more time exploring new planes, or at the very least have Curst and The Hive feel more different in texture. I felt like I was just in a suburb and not a place for the worst peoples.

It was a very good game, one I may or may not play again years from now. I did check out what they had for other endings than what I got and... well, there's not much differentiation enough to try at that again. The journey there was excellent though.

Played through it at least a dozen times already. Not enough to stop me from buying it and playing it again... and immediately starting with a new character after I beat it. I kind of like Dark Souls.

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends

- Wei > Jin >>> Wu > Shu

First started back in January/February once I got a new graphics card capable of playing it. I struggled through the Shu campaign because I liked the characters most in the Tutorial, not really realizing that Wei Wu Shu Jin is the best order for story purposes. Holy **** was I confused 90% of the time on what was going on. I also wasn't a fan of the map layouts or how quickly I would get curbstomped 95% of the way through a mission with not much effort to one or two guys who decided to cut my life down to nothing with two attacks. And every time I would start getting a handle on a character or got some good weapons to use, the next map would have three entirely new guys with minimal levels and almost always nothing good to equip. I also asked on Discord after beating Shu (Guan Yu is amazing; and Shangjiang is my only 150 level character thanks to ambition mode) what would constitute beating the game and they said all four main campaigns. I gave up midway through Wu and only sporadically played since, with more and more frustrations.

Well, turns out my biggest problem wasn't the game but my monitor. See, my old monitor I had for ten to fifteen years and though it has served me well, its old ratio wasn't doing me any favors with most new releases. I splurged on a brand new monitor over the summer and now can actually read what things weapons can do, can understand the minimap better, and its not a cramped mess. Such a simple solution.

Still, the game is not a favorite. Dragon Quest Heroes was a lot more fun for MUSOU, and Crosscode actually gave me more of a thrill for running through hordes of bad guys and racking up that combo bonus. Ambition Mode is excellent even though I took way too long actually getting to the meat of subjugation. I enjoy a good deal of the characters and voice acting, and I love a lot of the outfits. Like, costuming in this game is just hilarious and amazing and beautiful, as are the oversized or floating or unexpected weapons. The characters themselves are visual treats.

And now that it's over, I like the Rashomon-style storylines where every clan has a different perspective to the same events. Cao Cao was an evil bastard in Shu and Wu, but I absolutely loved following him in Wei.

This is a game I'm still learning to love. I think I'll keep playing it now and again, if only so Han Dang isn't forgotten.

I'm about 95% sure in the sequel that you can put the cursor over an enemy and press a certain button to get a highlighted range of their movement and by extension their physical attack range.

I'm 100% certain that is in the first Shining Force. I've only gone through the second game once, so my recollection might be a little hazy for that, but I'm pretty sure that feature carried over.

Moved The Witcher from 3. 00's to 28. Supernatural

3. Beat a game released between 2000-2009

Batman: Arkham Asylum

- Wow. Those were some hilariously godawful end credits. I was laughing by the fifth time there was a repeat storyboard not even two minutes into the zoom in, zoom out mess. Especially since some of those pictures are the hilarious Batman punching the sky scream and Batman high kick zoom straight into crotch.

Also, I'm guessing this was by the same or similar teams as Deus Ex: Human Revolution? It hits a lot of the same beats with excellent exploration, great henchmen dialogue, cool gadgets and stealth sections, and absolutely abysmal boss sections. Aside from Poison Ivy, the bosses were nearly all terrible. It was either big guy runs into walls, fight lots of badguys then hit the boss once, or fight lots of badguys while big guy runs into walls.

Detective Mode is also broken as hell. The only downside to using it 95% of the game is missing out on the visuals, but honestly the sedate blues and oranges felt better than the blooming reds and greens.

Overall very fun. Dated as tons of games have taken and expanded on the Arkham Asylum formula since, but still holds up. Honestly, it began to feel like a really cool 3D '90s action beat em up with how little enemy variation there was. It felt like stages of a Simpsons/TMNT/XMen arcade style game when it came to slugfests.

Only one more game to go...

A big improvement on the base game, both in plot (Estinien for SMFFFC!!) and in gameplay (it's so much better playing with a full set of skills; the early dungeons are awful by comparison).

Also apparently I never added A Realm Reborn to my list, so I'm putting it under 38. Beat a game you'd dropped or had a long hold on

Moved Final Fantasy X from 37. Backlog to 24. Romance

Alternatively, I was considering Terranigma to Historical (it has Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell), and Dynasty Warriors 8 to Romance (of the Three Kingdoms).

37. Beat a game that's been in your backlog for a long time

Tecmo Secret of the Stars: A Fantasy

- Took 20+ years, but the game I rented from my rental store at least thrice a year until I bought it when they went out of business is FINALLY beated. I have a lot of history with this game. Though Secret of Mana was my first RPG, this was my first classical turn-based fare so I have great nostalgia for this turd. I can't believe it was released stateside in 1995. It blows my mind that not only was this NES-looking RPG released after the Final Fantasies and at the same time as Secret of Evermore, but it took two years to translate. No, seriously, it's unbelievable that the two years between JP and NA releases had more than a few weeks devoted to translation.

But still, despite a rather uninspired story, high encounter rate, stiff boss battles, an extremely underwhelming translation, graphics that would look much more at home on the NES outside of battle, and a slew of guide-needed things to do (the GoldPin, getting Fireworks, learning what half the items even actually do)... I still had a load of fun. Part of it is definitely nostalgia, another is doing the Battle Chasers playstyle of having Critical Role playing on the side (five or six episodes thanks to this game!). But I genuinely enjoyed a lot of the things it tries to do. I still love building up the town and finding people to populate it. I enjoy recruiting Kustera and playing around with my second team. The random crazy shenanigans are still hilarious like a town that was turned to dogs by a crime boss called Bad-Bad or saving a party member from the circus but he's been turned into gold statue of a lion when you finally rescue him or disguising my boys in bunny suits so they could sneak into an all-female town.

I also still love the monster designs, even with a lot of colorswaps, and the music is good despite being very short loops (sailing is awesome). I had a really good time with it, more than I really expected. Of the two classic SNES games I played a lot of but never finished, I was much more impressed with Tecmo's RPG than the Illusion of Gaia sequel. The game got even weirder than expected after I passed where I last left off (more in a moment) with the entire town getting overrun by displaced *******s then kicked out by kids THEN TURNED INTO A FLYING UFO CITY THAT GOES INTO A VOLCANO and loved the final boss dungeon. Like, that endgame with Kustera and Aquatallion working together was what I wanted more of from the outset and I was so happy to have it.

Fun story. Last week I was fiddling around with cables on my TV and noticed an old ANT/CBL screw-in port and realized I could hook my SNES up! I was much excite, and considering I had one final game to play, I wanted to make it something I never beat. I think this was my only SNES game I never actually finished and made it my mission to make this my game 52 (sorry Trails of Cold Steel and Stardew Valley). Hooked up my SNES, put in the cart, and voila!

I went to start from an old file, and holy crap. It was very weird seeing characters renamed to my AOL Chatroom Red Dragon Inn friends, and my secondary team named after zones in EverQuest. The file must've been from 1998-2000. Huuuge nostalgia rush. I played for a few hours, and went back to it the next day, but my SNES wouldn't turn on. It died after ten years on the shelf. It died playing probably the worst game I own. I think the system was so excited to be played again only to realize it was to play this game then committed seppuku out of shame and despair. My poor SNES.

Still, had a wonderful experience, but I'm glad it's over.
