Time for the second half of the year! #bump#

Credit goes to tazzyboyishere for first starting this in 2016. Basically, there are 50 challenges outlined below that will require you to beat 52 games total. This isn't a competition and there's no prize for winning aside from a sense of accomplishment. This is just a fun thing to participate in while we all work through our video game libraries. It also gives us a place to discuss what we're playing. Feel free to join in!

Rules:
- A single playthrough of a game can only be used for one challenge
- Use your own judgment to decide if game fits in a certain category
- Games started in 2017 or earlier are fine as long as they're finished in 2018
- Please add your own games to the spreadsheet linked to below, which anyone can edit
- When using the spreadsheet, please don't mess with checklists/tallies that aren't yours
- There's a tab listing favorite games in the spreadsheet if you need help with Challenge 43
- If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

So realistically, I need to beat a game from this year, a game from a series that I have never played, a JRPG, and a 25+ hour game. I could also get Virtua Fighter 5 since it is a GwG title I think to knock out a fighting game...

14. Beat a JRPG

Shining Force 2

Not as many interesting characters in this one I feel, but still a good game.

41. Beat a game with a Metascore below 70

Any suggestions for this? I couldn't find a way to see low scoring games so I don't know what even counts.

In previous years, I just checked the scores of a a few games I planned to play until I found one. It's not the most efficient search method but a surprising amount of games score in the 60s.

Ico

So a lot of aspects of this game got pretty frustrating, but I found that all those aspects, helped make the game as beautiful and powerful as it it. It's definitely a game that I'll think of when discuss the medium as art, even though I doubt I'll ever play it again.

Rusty Lake Paradise

- Either I've gotten used to it or the Rusty Lake games aren't as haunting as I remember them to be. This probably had some of the most fun puzzles, but it just felt more random overall than most of the Cube Escape series. The timeline didn't seem to make much sense (though it never really does).

Just off memory...

Case 23 > Seasons > Birthday > Roots > Cave > Paradise > Hotel > Lake > Arles > Harvey's Box

Don't remember Mill or Theatre at all.

42. Beat a game with a Metascore above 90

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

- I think this is my second oldest Steam game after Team Fortress 2, and it only took me about nine years to beat it. It was interesting running down through old save files and seeing who I named my characters in the past: Tracy Mombaro (for Inviso), Ocean Delenn (a combo of CrimsonOcean and satai delenn), Maniacal Demigod (after Maniac & my Olympian Demigods from B8BL). It wasn't until I've actually played some D&D and understood AC, THACO, and how important battlefield control can be that I really made any major headway towards completion. This was the first playthrough I got on the Leviathan, went to Korriban, and definitely met the endgame. It was a very difficult but rewarding experience, even if I knew the big spoiler =P for almost a decade now.

Full Light Side game, really enjoyed the story and the planets visited. Again, felt like an awesome D&D campiagn now that I've gotten a better taste for that side of the Action RPG experience after raising myself on Secret of Mana and Tales of Symphonia where it's less putting focus on making sure you're prepared for the worst and more grinding until everything crumbles to dust at your feet. A level 20 capstone, limits to what you can put points into or equip, and planning for your path... it's relatively new and weird and I'm glad I got through it. It was a joy getting to see the big hype moments I missed my first few times. I still remember fondly things like finding Jolee for the first time or running around lost on Tatooine (it's not nearly as confusing as I remember).

Definitely one of the best games I've played in terms of characters, plot, and choice-making, but I don't think I'm likely to play again anytime soon for that Dark Side file because of some really intensely slow areas, accursed and lengthy dialogue, buggy pathing and glitching cutscenes. Awesome game, but it does show some signs of age.

Roster Rankings:

Most Used: Main > Bastila > Carth > Mission > T3-M4 > Canderous > Jolee > HK-47 > Zaalbar > Juhani

Most Cared For: Main > Bastila > Mission > Jolee > Canderous > Zaalbar > HK-47 > Carth > T3-M4 > Juhani

I'm tempted by the Dark Side of the Force to make a new playthrough just to troll Carth and turn Juhani and Bastila into my Sith Apprentices.

Moved Life is Strange from 30 (Female Lead) to 43 (User's Favorite)
Moved Final Fantasy X from 43 (User's Favorite) to 14 (jRPG)

30. Beat a game with a female lead.

Gone Home

- That was short but sweet. The only things I knew going in were that is was going to be fairly short, creepy house exploration, and not going to be what you expect it to be. It was right on all three counts. The first half of the game was definitely waiting for the other shoe to drop... dark and scary house, completely empty, noises in the walls, ghost stories about the uncle, secret panels, twitching and blinking out light bulbs, time travel fiction, nearly every single scrap of paper I could find dated no later than October 1994...

...and then, as the exploration continued and nothing jumped out (there were even hints of a cat and yet no jumping cat!), I began to really appreciate what kind of game it was. It really got that depth of fear and paranoia when going into an unknown place and things aren't what they'd seem. All the scary and tense moments had explanations: Sam is as bad as her sister at leaving lights on all over the house; it's old wiring so sometimes stepping a certain place shorts out a wire; mom and dad went on an anniversary trip and have been too busy to unpack or set up for Katie; the blood splatter is really hair dye) etc. There was so much minute lore that the place felt really lived in and you could get a good sense of who these absent characters were, what they liked, what they were going through, their pasts... it was keen. Sam's story and journal entries and the adventures of Captain Allegra (and her reproductive story)... that was fun. It subverted expectations of what a horror game can be, and I was very happy to have played it.

25. Beat a game with horror as a central theme
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

There are some weird issues with this game but at the same time it's amazing

cons
-WAY too much backtracking
-Combat was frustrating. It would squeeze too many enemies into small areas (which led to getting boxed into corners with a fixed camera), toward the end enemies felt repetitive and would respawn almost endlessly, and the way combat worked often left me without my bearings at the end, where I couldn't remember what direction I was supposed to be going (since both the entrance and exits to most locations looked similar)

pros
+Senua is incredible
+Story is incredible
+Portrayal of psychosis is incredible
+Sound design was some of the best I've ever seen in a game; it's one of the only games I've played that insists on using headphones, and does so to such great extent. It's basically a super intense ASMR game

shrug
+/- Puzzle mechanics are hit or miss, sometimes they're really awesome and clever but after a while they feel repetitive, or frustrating because you can see the solution right in front of you but just can't view it at the exact right angle the game wants
+/- Norse mythology backdrop is just making me want to play God of War again

Swapped Valkyria Chronicles for Turmoil for the strategy game and put the former at JRPG.

I already have games in place for 2018 and new series, but since it doesn't seem likely that I will beat a fighting or rhythm (could do Child of Eden), I will need to do a 25+ hour game. I think that four or so of the games that I have beaten this year took between 20-23 hours. If I could combine all the Halo games that I have played, I'd have that covered already.

13. Beat a WRPG

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Fantastic game. I admittedly wasn't very high on it for the first 5-6 hours. It took me about a week of playing for 45 minutes at a time and stopping to really get into the game and enjoy what it had to offer. I thought the entire starting area was pretty weak and the initial parts of the story didn't really draw me in, but once it really got going and the world opened up, I was hooked. Definitely one of the better games overall I've played in recent memory.

It's weird for me, because I generally really enjoy these open world games that have dozens of side quests and a bunch of collectibles on the map. Once I get going, I'll be in the zone for 5-6 hours at a time just going to every notable location on the map, yet often when I first start these games I get a sort of anxiety when seeing a huge map with a million different icons on it and realize how long it's going to take me to go through them.

I always end up enjoying these games, but the early goings always feel very daunting until I begin to make progress and find the best way to approach things.

I had a similar experience with The Witcher 3, and that ended up being one of my favourite games of all-time.

It was definitely a slog though at the start. I have a self-imposed rule of only playing 1 game at a time in order to help with my backlog, and if it wasn't for my need to push through I could have definitely seen myself moving on to something else a few hours in.

Saying it was shockingly bad execution of offense is incredibly inaccurate.

LSU didn't play good offensively, but that's because Alabama was just straight up smothering defensively. LSU could have put together a great offensive game and still struggled to put up points in this situation.

3. Beat a game released between 2000-2009

The Witcher Enhanced Edition

- This was an excellent tale. Good characters, excellent tale of intrigue, very fun hero to play, excellent use of choices with neutral being a legitimate option for once, and a pretty solid setting that was easy to get lost in. I very much enjoyed figuring out the mysteries and plots behind Vizima's troubles. Trying to figure out what would be the best methods of dealing with situations, trying to take the harder roads nearly always... what a ride. The lore and intrigue dialed down in the final hours, but by then it was a hard push to face down the villains and choose who Geralt was in the end.
