Hypothetically, let's say the United States of America invades another country in the next two-six years and it's in Central or South America to help with their political/economical instability or to look for more oil or whatever reason the president or the Pentagon has.

Suppose the the draft is reinstated and, assuming you're an American and qualified, you have to report.

What would your reaction and/or next actions be, assuming you weren't drafted or don't have to serve?

(Obviously, non-Americans need not apply).

It's unrealistic the draft will ever be reinstated again unless there is a dramatic shift in our military power. As is the US could conquer the world with its military superiority.

Or, you know, I just fly out someplace. Although, realistically, there's no way I'd qualify so... moot point. Alternatively I'd enlist in the coast guard or another branch which means I won't get stuck actually fighting.

If we ever wind up in a war where they start drafting 41-year olds with bad eyes and a broken down body, the country's so absolutely fucked that it honestly won't matter if I go or not.

But back when I actually was of the right age, I freely said often that I'd dodge the ever-living fuck out of the draft (and my Vietnam Vet father who HAD been drafted used to say that he'd do everything in his power to keep me out of the military). But even if they did draft me, I'd be dishonorably discharged fairly quickly - because I'm anti-authoritarian and stubborn as fuck, so I'd never make it through boot camp without multiple beatings, and then them eventually throwing me out to keep me from being a bad example to all the other people they're trying to break down.



Not that any of this matters, because in our current political environment, we're never going to have a draft again (and if we did, they wouldn't have enough MPs in the military to arrest all of the people who would dodge, nor prisons to hold them all). Nor do we really WANT one - the mechanized and technical nature of the modern military makes it less efficient to force part-time service troops into combat, because by the time you're done training them to fight effectively, you've used up a large portion of their mandatory service period. We're better off with a smaller volunteer army supported by high technology than we are a larger mass of meat.

The only time it ever comes up at all is when one side in Congress is trying to make a point, and it's usually the anti-war side of the argument that brings it up as a deterrent, because they KNOW the pro-war side won't approve a draft (and it sort of calls them out in a "put your money where your mouth is" sort of scenario). No politician these days would ever seriously push for a draft, because if they did those politicians are never getting elected again, and in a world of career politicians doing what's necessary to keep their jobs as opposed to what they sincerely believe is right for the nation, no one is going to commit that sort of career suicide (especially when most politicians these days aren't qualified to do much of anything else).

You currently cannot be drafted if you are 26 or older.

You don't have to fight if you're drafted; you can claim conscientious objector status and serve in a noncombat capacity, or take a job doing something contributing to the national interest. There are also hardship exemptions (if your family depends on you for support, for instance), surviving son or brother exemptions (your parent or sibling died as a result of military service, was captured or MIA), and exemptions for ministers and ministerial students. Some non-citizens and dual nationals are also exempt, depending on the country. Students can have their induction postponed, and there are medical deferrals as well (obesity is probably #1 now).

You also cannot be drafted if you're already in the military, so you could preemptively join the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps or the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps (good luck getting in, however, the NOAA Corps has only 300 commissioned officers, no enlisted or warrant officer personnel, the PHSCC has about 6700 officers). Or you could join the Coast Guard; you might still end up in a combat role, but it would be with the Navy so you'd spend your time on a ship far away from the action.

I'm 5-A, so it's all academic to me.

I can't kill anyone. But i could probably be an officer or a tech job, I'm a programmer so I'm fairly useless at anything physical.
Also motion sickness, flight sickness, ocean sickness, allergic to almost everything inhaled, slightly obese depending on definition, sleep apnea, reflexes in the 2 second range for unfocused, and 500ms for focused (a normal person for focused is around 200-300 ms)

To be fair, as a former MP I dont think we'd have any authority to arrest a draft dodger unless you were on a federal installation.

As for the question, I'm already on VA disability so I doubt they'd be interested in drafting me, and if they attempted it I'd dodge the living hell out of the draft because fuck that.
