Doctor Strange

Wait, I think this is the first time I've ever seen the Marvel Studios intro. That was really pretty cool.

Was that a reference to War Machine in his friend's phone call? Strange really shouldn't have been looking at his phone while driving.

This movie is moving pretty fast. I guess they want to get through his origin fast enough so that we're not dealing with boring Doctor Normal for too long, but the pacing does seem to be a little quick.

Hahaha the Ancient One punched Strange's soul out of his body. This is quite the special effects demonstration.

"Time will tell how much I love you" I wonder if Time has anything to do with this movie hmmmmm

Strange succeeded at opening his first portal, then shaved, and put on a robe. He immediately changed his appearance and took off. Zero to sixty. I guess his supernatural intelligence exists for a reason.

I'm a pretty big fan of the movie taking off so quickly. The humor is a wee bit heavy handed though.

And I'm done. It... seemed a little short. But... at no point did I want to take my attention away, after it kicked in. That's... pretty unique, insofar. I'll have to think about what that means.

Postcredits Scene - Thor really makes everything better. What an absolute gem. Best part of Ultron, great in his appearance here, and in his one shots. I can only assume Ragnarok is going to be the best movie ever.

This thread keeps making me want to go back to AoS S5.

But now I'm busy with Luke Cage 2.

I liked it, it wasn't outsdaing since it was just a standard origin story but it had some creative visuals and the Bargain thing was great.

I'm not very hyped for Mordo though since it's the same sequel hook they use in the Green Lantern film and also Iron Fist. Granted GL2 will never happen but thats still the same villain origin story happening 3 times.

New guy joins order, learns it too fast, beats ancient villain that order fears by using modern methods, and veteran member is mad at how the old ways are being broken and turns evil because of that.

I always thought Strange was kind of structurally weird. Absolutely no time is skipped (lol) from when he starts messing with the eye. From there it just goes non-stop until the end. I thought it should have taken a breather at some point there. It has nice cool-down scenes like the one with Strange and Ancient One but there's that background urgency to them all.

Just did a little looking into Battlebond and holy shit some of these cards make this seem like it'll be a pretty fun set/play mode.

Just watched Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Really enjoyed it. My only disappointment with the movie was Ghost. I really enjoyed that first little scene she had with Scott where she comes off as this psychotic little girl almost, but then the rest of the movie just has her angry, and I think that kinda psychotic angle would've been really cool to see considering her 'redemption' storyline. Also dat ending

i think this is a bit of a stretch. The motivations of each of these guys was quite different.

Doctor Strange: Mordo is definitely unbending in his belief that certain lines can't be crossed - using the dark dimension or the Eye of Agamotto is unnatural and is sure to have horrible and unforeseen consequences.

Iron Fist: Davos is *ostensibly* serious about the mysticism of K'un-lun the order he's from, but with him it's all personal. He wanted to be the Iron Fist, and Danny, an interloper, took it from this. He struggled to look past this and accept Danny is the rightful Iron Fist and be his support... and then Danny left. He feels betrayed by Danny, and the fact that Danny stole his destiny makes it 100x worse. He has a personal grudge against Danny. The order of the crane or the duty of the Iron Fist or whatever may be something he brings up, but they aren't the real reason he's going on a vendetta against Danny.

Green Lantern: Sinestro has no motivation. It's not even what you suggest about it being mad at the new guy for breaking the rules. Putting on the yellow ring makes no sense. It's just a poorly written hook for the next movie with no thought behind it. To compare it to the other two, regardless of how well or poorly written their execution was, is an insult.

Tying these all together as the same thing happening 3 times is just flimsy IMO.

Anyways, overall for Doctor Strange, I thought it was fine. It was a fine origin story. Benedict was good as Doctor Strange. The visuals were all cool.

But it didn't make me *love* Doctor Strange. He's the magic guy I guess. He's alright.

I also thought magic as a whole wasn't very explored. I wasn't left feeling wonder at the things they can do. It felt really... basic. Aside from the acid trip meant to impress us. I feel like there's this whole new avenue to tease us with but I don't feel like there's a ton I'm interested in seeing in future Doctor Strange movies.

"Dormammu, I've come to bargain" was excellent though.

Overall I put this in the lower end of the MCU in the "good" movie tier alongside most of the other good origin stories.

I'll do my writeup for Doctor Strange, but I'm just not feeling it yet. First, let's start AoS s4.

Aaaaaaaaaand ok they're just going to open up with a hype as fuck Ghost Rider introduction.

May hair is pretty good. And I KNEW Piper was going to stick around!

Awww yeah Yo-yo back in town. She is allll over Mack. I kinda got the impression she was more traditional than how she's currently acting towards Mack, but eh.

Radcliffe sticking around is pretty great too. I thought he was being kinda underutilized as a gimmick accomplice to Hive. He's a funny guy.

Surprised Daisy is breaking her bones with her powers, thought she was over that. I like Goth Daisy tho. Maybe I should just call her Quake.

I wonder who this new Director is. And Simmons bossing around May is funny. Weird. Don't know if I like it.

"Z1, we've got a situation. Need backup" May walks in and shoots a guy. "... That was efficient."

Ok Ghost Rider... skull is a little clean looking, kinda seems low budget special effects. But the flames and everything is great, the guy's face burning away.

Aww Fitz and Simmons cuddling in bed is adorbs.

Ghost Rider, AIDA, this ghost thing from the box... seems like they set up a lot of dominoes in episode 1. Excited to see where this goes!

Some of these action scenes are pretty good. Fitz just stabbed a dude in the hand. Watchdogs are still pretty lame though.

I know things have to change to stay fresh, but I sort of miss the small team dynamic with Coulson as the director. Not really feeling this "we're all just agents and lack authority even though we spent X years keeping this thing afloat" dynamic they've got going.

I'm only a couple episodes ahead of you, so maybe eventually we'll get back to how things have been.

I thought the Ghost Rider effects were great especially for network TV.

You can definitely tell this season got moved to a later time slot and they took advantage of it to be a little more gruesome.

I actually felt pretty bad when she took the shots for Fitz and Simmons, but this just sucks. I mean, Nathanson was a turn anyway, but still.

i'd guess that lady is ruth, but does she "excel at many instruments"? as far as i know she only plays percussion and piano/keyboards. though if you count all the percussion instruments as separate instruments that does work, i guess.

Continuing Doctor Strange

I'm not sure what else to say. The first half of the movie was very stereotypical origin story. It was whatever. Good. Nothing special.

From the moment Doctor Strange makes his first portal, it went 0-60 and I was completely enthralled for the rest of the movie. Even moreso than the kaleidoscopic sequence he first went through.

The humor was top notch. Cumberbatch was amazing. "I have come to bargain" was a great finish to the climax. The villain wasn't anything special, so minus points there. The supporting cast was alright. But really, Strange and his cloak were the entirety of the movie anyway. Well, them and Wong.

Strange feels like the last hurrah of the old era of MCU.

One-dimensional villain, boring origin story, arrogant protagonist. But so fun to watch him and his antics.
