Basically they pay you a lot because everyone doing the job pretty much hated the hours and then quits. Zangulus posted... My dad was working on trying to become a train conductor. He was 6 weeks into his 8 week treaining outside of Chicago when BN was merged with SF. Because of the merge they fired everyone in training. My dad was going to be a yard foreman and work on becoming a Conductor. There was one guy who was 2 hours away from finishing training when word came down. Ive got a whole bunch of family that worked the railroads. My uncle oversaw a bunch of the light rail building in the Twin Cities and was making really good money until he was fired for losing his license. That sucks. Apparently its an in-demand job right now since the economy has been doing well. I didnt apply to BNSF but I applied to Canada National and got an interview that I didnt take.
