Can someone explain to me the chronological order again?

So if three is six? Then 1 is actually 3 and 2 is actually -4?

Some of the early FF games weren't released outside of Japan, so they were skipped at first as far as naming goes.

Nowadays we refer to them properly, because we have access to all of them.

I think the ones we got were 1, 4, and 6? Which were renamed to 1, 2, and 3.

Japanese FF = International FF
Japanese FFII = Unreleased Internationally
Japanese FFIII = Unreleased Internationally
Japanese FFIV = International FFII
Japanese FFV = Unreleased Internationally
Japanese FFVI = International FFIII
Japanese FFVII = International FFVII

After FFVII, all numbering was congruent between Japanese and international releases. Later on, the missing games were released and all numbering for all games was normalized to match the Japanese numbering.

This.

Final Fantasy 1 was released in both Japan and the US. It was called just "Final Fantasy" in both countries. It did not sell all that well in the US though, so Final Fantasy 2 and 3 were never released in the US. Note that the real Final Fantasy 2 and 3 were NES games, not SNES games.

Final Fantasy 4 was the first one released on the SNES. It was renamed Final Fantasy 2 in the US since the real 2 and 3 were never released in the US.

I'm not sure if Final Fantasy 4 didn't sell well in the US or what, but for some reason Final Fantasy 5 was not released in the US. Final Fantasy 6 was released in the US, but it was renamed as Final Fantasy 3.

That was the end of the SNES era. Final Fantasy 7 was released on the PS1, and it was called Final Fantasy 7 worldwide. It was not renamed for the US.

FE just has subtitles, not numbered titles. The only messed up one is FE7, which has no subtitle in the western release.

It doesn't have a subtitle, but there's no 1, and they don't call Sacred Stones FE2. It's actually kind of odd that it doesn't have a subtitle, since even FE1 had one, but I guess they didn't want to confuse the "are Marth and Roy in this game?" crowd by calling it anything more complicated.

Its not that it didnt sell well, its more that by the time it was translated FFIII was already out in Japan and they didnt want to follow Enixs lead so they just translated the next one instead of the other two.

Final Fantasy 4 was the first one released on the SNES. It was renamed Final Fantasy 2 in the US since the real 2 and 3 were never released in the US.

The FFIV we got was the EasyType (watered down) version. If you play the version from Chronicles (PS1 with Chrono Trigger) you get the actual Japanese version with a different translation. As for after that, they didnt think that westerners would get FFV (my personal favorite of the series) and that it would be too difficult so they skipped it. They tried releasing it internationally multiple times but due to internal issues it never made it over here until Anthology for PS1.

That was the end of the SNES era. Final Fantasy 7 was released on the PS1, and it was called Final Fantasy 7 worldwide. It was not renamed for the US.

Yep, though technically the US version is the international version, as the Japanese version didnt have the superboss Weapons until later.

And if I'm not mistaken the FF Legends games were part of the SaGa series.

actually the main reason 2 wasn't originally released was cause nintendo of america thought it looked too similar to the original game. the graphics were the same. at the time, NoA wanted sequels to look drastically different from previous games to show progress. and look "better"

Makes sense. Partially why we got Doki Doki Panic reskinned as a Mario game instead of the original SMB2

FFI: The original on the NES with the Warrior of Light. International.

FFII: Firion, NES, Local

FFIII: Onion Kid, NES, Local

FFIV: Cecil, SNES, International, Originally released as 'FFII'

FFV: Butz, SNES, National

FFVI: Terra, SNES, International, Originally released as 'FFIII'

And from there on it has the 'official' numbering with VII staring Cloud on the PS1. People have adopted the 'official' numbering for a long time now especially with all the games playable here in the west.

It's a translation issue. His 'official' name now is 'Bartz', but we will always remember the original Butz.

Can we skip International and say NA instead?
7 was the first numbered game to hit Europe.

International means something else anyway. Like the international versions of games that had more content.
