I have watched people play through bits of 1 and 2 but never in their entirety. They have been owned and in my backlog for a very long time.

Honestly, even as a fan of the franchise, the only good game in it is really 2. But it's still fun to re-experience just for the production values and story.

I would say the best thing about the series is its pathos. It does create a kind of feeling that isn't too common in gaming

Certain specific fights can be really satisfying, too

I would recommend jumping in and trying it with low expectations, and if the story ever starts feeling bad or stupid to just abort because it never improves

This game is actually significantly more difficult than I was anticipating. To the point I'm pretty sure I am may be doing something fundamentally wrong.

Or there was just a spike in difficulty at Agrabah or something. Cave of Wonders couldn't actually kill me, but the fight took...forever. To say the least.

I am marathoning my way through this game pretty hard right now. I have enjoyed what I've played thus far for the most part.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. I loved this series back in 05-06 but am a little worried as to how they've aged (especially the first). I do remember it being pretty challenging though, especially if you're not as leveled as you should be.

I do some looking up, and it looks like the Final Mix version (which I assume you're playing) gives you what I considered the game-breaking ability at Level 43. The original game gave it at 30, which IIRC almost trivialized everything else.

EDIT: And it also seems that the ability was nerfed in Final Mix. Bastards making things HARDER.

Woo yea you're burning through it hard for a first time player. That's super cool though! Don't think I've seen a first timer go through it so quickly and eagerly, usually Deep Jungle bums people out a bit.

Cave of Wonders fight is legit pretty tough though. It can be very finicky so I don't blame you.

I legitimately adore the Kingdom Hearts games - the series has had its ups and downs but the good parts of it are good in a way that I really can't compare to any other video game. An earlier poster said it pretty well with "pathos."

That aside KH2 has some of the best gameplay I've ever seen in a video game so uh, look forward to that.

I beat Ursula. To say I had a real working strategy would be a straight up lie. I tried a lot of things.

What ended up working was pure cowardice more than anything. I basically let Donald and Ariel beat up on her because Sora going in just seemed to result in horrible lightning death. I did get some attacks in during periods I knew would be safe(After she spit a big laser or did the suck in thing seemed safe enough), but mostly just stayed out because going in drained Donald's mana too quickly.

I tried all combinations of party, Goofy seemed incapable of doing anything, so he got the boot.

Yeah, Ursula was my big struggle recently in my playthrough, it mostly just comes down to properly using Mermaid Kick for mobility. This is difficult because the controls in KH1 can be pretty ass sometimes, but since you can mermaid kick faster than she can suck you in, and you can use lateral movement faster than her FACE LASERS can track you, you can actually pretty safely avoid most of her damage through proper movement. But for FACE LASERS you wanted to be closer to her and not on the very outer edge of range because then you could cover more degrees of the circle faster than her rotation. At least that's what I remember doing the trick.

Alternatively you head back to Traverse Town and start crafting accessories until you craft yourself several lightning reduction accessories for everyone in your party and then she'll do next to no damage <_<. This method makes the fight easier but takes significantly longer to prepare for.

The main games are Sony-exclusive and I am sure many people never owned a Playstation
I did play Chain of Memories though, because I was curious what KH is all about....it wasn't really a good representation

For whatever reason KH1 is legitimately the hardest in the series imo. Part of it is due to the clunky combat which wasn't refined until later, but enemies can also do a ton of damage out of the blue.

I decided to do my replay in Proud Mode even though I felt I would regret it. That regret turned out to be reasonable. In the other games Proud generally is hard in the beginning but evens out as you progress providing decent challenge overall. Here there are so many things that three or two shot you. Now that I'm nearing the very end of the game it's been better since I have most of the useful abilities, but stuff like Pot Centipede, Ursula 2 (who I'd always thought of being easier than Ursula 1) and Anti-Sora were pretty tough. I'm not even sure how well I'll do the bonus bosses.

Dude that Ursula 2 fight on Proud is rediiiiiiculous lmao, your party members actively fuck you over in it by being near you, thus making the lightning that shoots down that more likely to hit you. So you have to hope they die and then just stay the FUCK away from them.

Halloweentown was very short but i thought kind of neat.

Finally beat this dumb shadow boss that for the first 10 attempts or whatever would shift into a pattern of being untargettable over and over.

Actually beat it by remembering summons are a thing and calling in bambi for a strategic mana refill.

Then Hook just kind of fell over he didn't seem to do much of anything.

Hook can be dangerous if you get in an unlucky spot, he does a TON of damage. It's just easy to fly around him and stuff.

He hit for almost half my health a couple times but if he looked like he might do anything dangerous i just flew away. And the ship enemy served as an infinite mana battery.
