I even asked about ultimate spiderman and had the same reaction when I saw one from 2000 and one from 2009!

He first appears in Ultimate Fallout #4

Then he gets his own series in Ultimate Comics: Spiderman

That was probably the 2009 series you saw. The 2000 series is about Peter Parker

Just start with 2000 Ultimate Spidey. It's great.

this. it's literally the beginning for that universe. and the 2009 series is about a different person. TC should have looked more into it before he gave up. too many people get too intimidated by comics. but it's not as hard as you think.

It's one of the things that made me hesitant to jump into comics. You don't where you can start from unless you specifically ask for help first.

it's not that bad though. you don't HAVE to start at the beginning. you can find the beginning of arc that looks interesting and start there, and then jump around. it's better than never reading them at all. your missing out. anyway, comics are designed to have many natural jumping on points. they WANT new customers to come in. like I keep saying, it is no where near as hard as you think it is

I will give an exaple. I had't read spiderman in YEARS and then in 2011 at the beginning of an event called Spider Island, I started up again. alot of stuff was different but by the time i finished Spider Island, I felt I understood the differences mostly. and eventually figured out all the stuff that had changed

Yeah, the original Ultimate Spidey -- from what I read of it -- is pretty great. That made the character change a bit unfortunate, especially since he was only introduced after the event.

You can usually start with #1 of any book, whether it's a new title or a numbering reset. Otherwise you could just look for the issue a chosen character was introduced or an arc starts.

But that still all pretty much boils down to "jump in somewhere and figure it out," which is what I wanted to avoid in the first place.

I guess it's not so bad if they try to keep new readers in mind whenever a new arc starts, and not just assume you know everything that's going on.

well if it's that important to read from the beginning, the Marvel Unlimited app has a feature where you can search by published year. and you can go back as far as you want (earliest is 1939) and it will show you the issues as they were published in order back then. and you can read what you want as you work towards modern day. it's only 10 dollars a month. it's pretty cool. they've gotta have like a million issues on there by now. it has nearly the entire history of Marvel. but they add in more backissues every week, plus new issues (but 6 months behind the current published books)

oh btw, about the keeping new readers in mind thing. Marvel is pretty good about that. usually at the beginning of every issue they have a blurb that tells you what they think you need to know to understand what's going on. a recap that is 1 paragraph long

I've asked a question about starting from the "beginning" and was told with the various retconning and whatnot over the years from the Bronze Age, Silver Age, Gold Age, and onward that like others have mentioned it is better to start with an arc you enjoy and continue from there.

When I was younger, there was a comic book store I visited often. But I didnt buy anything because I didn't know where to start. But also because I like the connected universe and would want them all. I still feel like that. But I might buy one or two. I go to a place every Sunday that sells them. But maybe I should just get the app. That way, I can have them all. And then maybe go back to the comics if I ever catch up...

@quigonzel

So far what I've done is I read the conclusion of the New 52 Superman titles as well as the runs of New 52 Batman. Then I read DC rebirth stand-alone issue and have pretty much just followed the main Bats, Supes, Flash, Green Lantern. Justice League and Titans/Teen Titans books since.

I think I'd like to also get into red hood and the outlaws, I'm mildly intrigued from what I hear of it.

Starting at the end of new 52 is a good idea, is it true that the watchmen is somehow involved and the blue dr Manhatten is made to be responsible for the new 52 and stuff? When rebirth first started with the comedian's pin, all these rumors like that were circulating but I never did find out what the heck happened and wouldn't mind a cliffnotes summary.

When I was a kid I found a book the size of a dictionary at the library with the first 500 comics of The Amazing Spiderman.

It was great. I should find a copy online. I don't even know what to Google, does anyone know?

I love comics, but this is one of the reasons I avoid super hero comics.

Try Fables, Saga, Birthright, Chew, Bone, Sandman, Lucifer, Y the last man, Locke and Key, or Johnny the homicidal maniac.

All great stories, much easier to follow. And they are pretty easy to get the stories from the beginning instead of looking for some obscure one or a reprint you might be interested in.

There's no way something like that exists. 500 comics would be about 10,000 pages. No book binding could handle that many pages.

Now back in the early 2000s there was a company called GIT-Corp that did "40th anniversary releases" of Marvel Comics. These were digital comics on CD-ROM. The Amazing Spider-Man collection had something like 500 comics on one CD. There were also other collections for other Marvel collections.

That is probably what you are actually remembering. I don't recommend finding these GIT-Corp collections though. They are long out of print and not many copies were actually made, so they sell for ridiculously high prices nowadays. Plus, they are fairly low resolution scans since they're so old. Modern digital comics are much higher resolution. Something like Marvel Unlimited is a much better solution than these GIT-Corp collections.

Pick up a graphic novel, if you like it pick up another...and another...and another...

Once you feel comfortable enough, then plop down the $4 every 2 - 4 weeks for the actual comic.

That sounds more likely. The biggest collection of comics are usually Omnibus and the biggest one of those I have seen isn't even 50 comics, and those have almost 1000 pages (and are gigantic)

The worst part, from what I have seen, is people not understanding the taste of their audience and just saying their favorite thing.

I realize you like X and don't get to talk about it, but that's 100% not for me, and I'm not interested.

EDIT: Also, y'all are arguing the forest from the trees. You can say, "oh, he meant this copy", but that doesn't change the fact that it happens every time you want to learn about something new. These names are so similar it's awful to try and figure out what the f*** is going on from an outside perspective.
