The beef you guys eat down there is sprayed down with shit in processing that kills most of the bacteria. In Canada however, the Ministry of Health forbids the use of ammonia in ground beef. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis; I hope your treatment goes well. If you do start to feel ill, don't take any chances. Get to Urgent Care or an ER because you don't want to mess with E. Coli under the circumstances. But I think the incidence of contaminated meat is actually pretty low because when it comes right down to it, most people have pretty bad food handling practices.
