It's a higher power of your choosing.

The first step is admitting you have no control or power over your addiction

That is horribly untrue. You have control over your addiction and thinking a "higher power" is somehow going to stop you will just end up in you relapsing and failing to address your personal shortcomings.

Hopefully you can love yourself after all of this because that is the issue, not your lack of Mohammed or whatever. You are filling a void and stuffing that void with something else is equally unhealthy.

On the other hand, she's gotta be overjoyed about the 'out of your control' thing since she is anti personal responsibility.

Having NO control versus having to maintain control is completely different.
Losing control but being able to regain it and never having it aren't the same.

@ASlaveObeys I think you're honestly just arguing semantics. Addiction is literally when alcohol or a drug hijacks the control center of your brain. Yes, you will obviously always have some sort of control over your choices and what you do about your addiction, but what I think the 12-steps really have right is that you have to recognize that your "control" has really been compromised and that it is important to take certain things out of your control. The higher power doesn't necessarily have to be God. I know some atheists who are able to work the steps.

When someone is able to admit that they do not have control over their own drug or alcohol use like they formerly thought they did, they can begin to make changes in their life that gives them a better chance to stay sober. That's what CBT will be helpful with. Best of luck to you @Jen0125. Just focus on building strong reliable support around you. Get a sponsor. Get a better understanding of what your triggers are and develop a healthy routine in your life. Aside from religion (I'm not religious), regular exercise is one of the most successful ways in keeping yourself clean. Focus on always setting goals for yourself related to education/employment and self-improvement. I would suggest doing something everyday that keeps you happy, a hobby or something.

Congrats on the sobriety!

The only problem with antabuse is compliance with the medication. People just stop taking it for a few days if they want to drink again. I think they use Vivitrol for heroin AND alcohol. It's just a shot you take like once a month and it helps get rid of cravings. Personally I'd think if it were at all possible, I'd take the non-medicated treatment route first. I'm not saying that Suboxone and other medications are not viable options though.

Nope. People who are particularly vulnerable to addiction are like this, people with at least normal willpower still have control to, without assistance, refuse addiction and power through the symptoms.
