Hello and Welcome!

You have arrived to my 2nd "Ranks 1,000+" project and this time around instead of B8 users we will be tackling 1,300 songs from the last 5 decades.

Just a couple of notes about the list:
-This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.

This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.

---There are 260 songs representing each of the chosen decades. (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's)

----Yes I know the current decade has not yet completed but we are doing this anyway. Tbh there was sooooooo much terrible music this decade that I doubt we'll get anything much better than what we got right here. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter because I don't want to sift through any more of this "Just Dance" infested generation.lol

Why didn't I include the 60's?
Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.

So Instead... I present that song as this topic's Theme Song:

(...I really don't know why I favor this tune over everything else but every time I hear it I get a special kind of goosebumps.)

Paint It Black / The Rolling Stones / 1966
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4irXQhgMqg" data-time="

The Rollout
I will be dropping you tunes in a couple ways here. Each song will be ranked out of total 1,300 and top 260 from their decade. There will be several statistics included in an ongoing update. There will also be a special ongoing update displaying the Top ranked songs in every category. *Categories were selected either by research or best fitting based on my experience.

The Nominator Challenge:
Some of you have submitted Nominations. You will recieve an update in topic whenever one of a user's nominations gets ranked. You will collect a Sum of points equivalent to the Sum of every placement on your list of nominations. The Larger this number, the lower you will place in the finals. The user who has earned the smallest score in the finals will have made the best nominations and be called Winner of the Nominator Challenge. (This is a Bonus game I play in most of my rankings.) ***At the start of this there are 2 Unclaimed Bots (#1 and #3). Anyone who wishes to claim a bot may do so in topic. First come, first serve.***

The Topic Discussion rules
Be Friendly, Be Respectful and Be Appropriate!

I'm always cool with off topic posting as long as it stays friendly. With my Bi-polar I am sometimes easily triggered by unfriendly disputes and would like this space to be as free from that kind of stress as possible. Thank You

So, enjoy and get settled in for the ride! There are sooo many great tunes heading your way. Thanks for stopping by and following the ranking. I hope that not only can users discover some new music here but maybe participate in some candid conversation about their favorite tunes as they pop up. Your Pal, Se7en. =P

Final Score Breakdown:

[Beat]-[Hook]-[Lyrics]-[Memories]-[Message]-[Stickiness]-[Top 100]

Example
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3

[The Beat]
This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.

[The Hook]
This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.

[The Lyrics]
This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.

[The Memories]
This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.

[The Message]
This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.

[The Stickiness]
This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.

[Top 100 Bonus]
The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.

[The Leaning Points]
Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows:
[0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score.
[0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down.
[0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

Write-Up:
Well... so I probably should have mentioned when I opened nominations that I really don't care for Mashups. I've got a few obsessive compulsive reasons for why I don't think it's legit music but the biggest problem comes when trying to score a mashup objectively. First of all you can't even call it a cover which would be more respectful to the original artist to make instead of straight up "sampling" an entire song whilst just laying down a different backtrack and then re-titling it to make believe it's an entirely different song. To even do this fairly I'd have to limit my criticism to the added track but tbh I won't bother due to the mentioned ocd reasons not mentioned above. Honestly I should have DQ'd this song from the start but by the "time" I got to this song I had 95% of the ranking complete and there was no turning back. I fail to understand how this qualifies as Comedy though...

Write-Up:
And without much surprise the one and only other Mashup in this ranking falls dead on it's counterpart. I can and will admit that I found this compilation much catchier than the last but cannot bring myself to rank it as it's own song. Of course you have "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John and "Chop Suey" by System Of A Down here but both of those songs appear elsewhere in this ranking and I'm not interested in ranking them twice. This one does have a more comedic feel to it so I kinda get the zaniness of a mashup but I still find much disinterest here and would rather listen to the original songs tbh.

Lol. What can I say about this tune. It's a weird one for sure. I don't know whether this dude is legitimately trying to be funny or if this is some weirdo from the far corners of youtube that should eventually pop up on Tosh.0 for a web redemption. The lyrics don't make sense and the vocals are terrible. After listening to this about 10 times the beat started to sink in slightly but there isn't much here to be excited about really. Poop on this nomination! :P

Huh. I hadn't noticed, but that actually is kinda neat.

Haven't had time to listen to the other two tracks to have any thoughts on them--nor do I have any real thoughts on mashups in general. I have nothing against them, but I also haven't heard many? They're a genre that I just haven't had any experience with.

I do have thoughts on my own nominations typed up and ready to go though!

==========================================

I Feel Better Than James Brown

Ahh, this song. Back in 2005, I spent a lot of time listening to an 80s music station on the TV. There were two tracks that mesmerized me: "Once in a Lifetime" and THIS oddity. Once played on a regular basis, but this song... I think I may have only heard it on that station once? But it stuck with me. Years later, I tried tracking the song down, but it was not easy--I eventually found a link on YouTube. It was shortly deleted for copyright reasons and I lost the link again.

After deciding to nominate "Once in a Lifetime", I knew I had to nominate this song. This obscure, mysterious song that seemingly no one had ever heard of. Problem was, I couldn't recall too many details. I wanted to ask the topic if they knew what the name was, but I couldn't think of a way of describing it that didn't make me sound completely psychotic:

"I'm looking for this song that I heard on an all 80s station. They say they were all 80s, but they also included songs from '79 and '90. It's this surreal spoken word song, I don't think there was any singing (though there may have been background singers)? The song had a celebrity name in the title, like that Cher song I nominated "Just Like Jesse James" and I think there was something about Castro knocking out CIA agents by blowing gas out of his cigar? And the song is really obscure, but it did get an official music video, but YouTube keeps pulling the video everytime I find it--perhaps as part of a conspiracy to drive me insane."

When I tried to find it, the first links I would hit were to "Once in a Lifetime" (of course), Baz Luhrmann's "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen", and "Paranomia" featuring Max Headroom. All good songs (I should thank Google for reminding me that Paranomia exists, I've listened to that song so many times this past month), but decidedly not what I was looking for.

Finally, I just Googled "Fidel Castro Mustard Gas Lyrics" and it actually found the song. And the music video was back up! It does exist! Yay!

...oh, I should talk about the song itself? It's weird.
==========================================

Eh, I still like it. Not terribly surprised by the ranking, but still a fan anyway.

Yes I agree the lyrics are a bit odd. It sounds like something that I may have passed by years ago listening to Dr. Demento but I couldn't be sure. Dr. Demento used to play all kinds of obscure songs on his station.

I've never listened to Dr. Demento's show, but it sounds like something I might have been interested in; it's rare, but sometimes I do like to listen to odd songs just for a change of pace.

Write-Up:
You know I almost swear I've heard this somewhere but I can't quite place the memory. I feel like maybe it appeared in one of the 28 Days movies or something. Certainly the abrupt ending gives off a decent 28 Days vibe imo. Anyway, Portishead is a band that has been been known for creepy atmospheric songs and is often compared to the Silent Hill themes. While I do like atmosphere in my games I think that was my main problem here with this tune. I had a hard time looking at it as a song and not a theme of some sort. The mix of beats and rhythms appear to be unbalanced at first honestly but unfortunately even after multiple listens it sounds like a jumbled mess to my ears.

Noooo Raka. Why the hell have you made me listen to this? Blah. No offense but I don't care for very many Broadway Musicals at all. I remember being forced to watch the movie when it came out by an ex-girlfriend and so I am glad that relationship ended. Some of the vocals are ok and I can feel a little bit of Larsons intention with the score in relation to the play but other than that, this is quite generic sounding stuff. It makes me think of my old corny TMNT: Coming Out of their shells cassette where they tried to turn words into music but failed.

Write-Up:
This song is it's own worst enemy imo. While I think the verse has an ok beat, the whole song sounds off when the jazzy chorus comes in. Maybe it isn't a brand of Hip Hop I understand but I like songs that maintain a consistent beat/rhythm all the way through. It does have way more potential than I give it credit for but since I have a hefty list of decent 90's tunes I think are better, it fails to compete here.

Not gonna lie, there is a big language barrier for me here. I don't tend to get into tunes I can't understand although that is not an exclusive rule since there are some songs I can sing without understanding. However, I definitely have no interest in singing along to this song. Is it racist to feel like this came from an eastern video game? It almost has the sound of a weird Sonic the hedgehog release or something. Speaking of Sonic games though, I haven't purchased or played a Sonic game since Generations was released.

I mean, we are almost at 2 points already and we haven't reached 10 rankings yet so it's safe to say that I liked a lot of what made the list. The nominations seem to be taking a beating already though and this is NFUN's 3rd loss in the first 10 rankings so let me make it clear that it's not you NFUN I promise. I spent over a year building the list for this so it's not unreasonable to expect that nominations would face an uphill battle. Anyway, I do think the video to this tune is kind of comical.

This isn't really anything I'd find myself humming to either. That said, I am a Piano fan though so I do have the tolerance for music like this. The beat and vocals are on par with each other but I couldn't find much of a following online for this artist. In fact most of what I did find suggests that this Band is very mediocre at best.

Looks like your fellow nominators were trying to sink your boat dude. You are officially 1/3rd of the rankings dropped so far. I gotta say things don't look too promising. This is an interesting one but at least it sounds like a song. It does get catchy if you listen for awhile but it's more like a Funk indoctrination than moving to a beat really. After 3 or 4 listens I caught myself slowly forgetting that there is even a language barrier here but it does pose some obvious difficulty since I had no where near enough time to learn a whole language before starting this ranking.

Our first ranking over 2 points and I'm not 100% certain I've made the right decision. I felt like this was really terrible to listen to like sitting at an opera. I mean.. that was harsh but don't get me wrong. I can clearly see the story telling going on and the psychedelic beat does sink in after awhile but this is nothing I'd ever listen to in the company of another person. It's bizarre in a good way but it's up and it's down with it's pacing. I'm probably never gonna have to hear this song again and I think I'll remember "that one weird song" I heard forever. It does seem to have a cult following though as I've seen the whole album praised at a fair average while conducting my research.

Yeah um... I got another confession to make. I have a real bad turn off reaction to anything that sounds like it's straight out of a James Bond movie. Not really sure why I have this aversion but meh... The vocals are nice in a way but overall this song is just too slow for my taste. Ok that's weird... according to the wiki, ""Shades of Cool" received general acclaim from music critics, who praised its musical style. A few of whom opined that the track would be appropriate for a James Bond film." Lol too funny. :P

I fail to understand how this qualifies as Comedy though...

There are a lot of songs in the album that are comedic. AC/VC, Bustin, Annoyed Grunt... However, what struck me about this song in the middle of everything was how pronounced the lyrics of YMCA became. YMCA is a disco dance party song. Everyone knows its fun to stay at the YMCA. Removing the disco and putting in Hans Zimmer, the lyrics blast out. I don't think I've ever really listened to YMCA; heard it, but never listened to what was said. And this... the hope and support, the message just hits. It feels like someone earnestly trying to get through to a person either in depression or out on the street or in dire straits and just keeping at it to break through and help.

I don't feel bad nominating it.

Surprisingly low ranking for Jailbreak, that dual guitar harmony is incredible and the funky, powerful verse chords are just about the catchiest thing ever. The way Lynott delivers those vocals too, with power and rebellion but yet deliberate pronunciation and storytelling.

Now, this sounds like a Sonic the Hedgehog theme imo. Never heard of the band before but I browsed a few of their other tunes and I'd be awfully surprised if they haven't done stuff for a video game before (even though I have found no evidence that they have). Much of their music sounds like it was taken straight out of one for sure though. A dude by the name of Dave Harris does most of the work on a synthesizer and shares a lot of his tunes right on his youtube page found here: https://www.youtube.com/user/goniochromism

Yay Metalcore (sarcasm). I really don't mind if screaming happens in some music ala System of a Down style but how do these artists do it with the screaming for the entire song? I think I legitimately had a headache after listening to most of your nominations Bane, no offense. There are some Metalcore tunes I don't mind with a much better beat to them but this one really put a damper on my ambition to rank things. I eventually slogged through it though and here is the lowest scoring Metalcore song in the line up.

When searching for this tune I kept getting results for the Legally Blonde Musical. They actually turned that series into a Musical??? Anyway, not the same song of course as this was created in the 80's. It's not really a memorable song tbh and compared to most 80's tunes this is something most folks have never heard of. It's got a mild beat and an ever so slightly catchy chorus but it's still not competitive enough to make it further than here with so many great tunes on the list.

The biggest problem with most of these tunes landing at the bottom is that I really prefer music I can follow along with, understand and even sing to. This isn't something I would sing to mostly because it doesn't have a consistent melody to it. The vocals seem to not mesh well with the instrumentation in some spots as well.. or at least my ears don't receive what's here very well anyway. It is sort of easy listening which isn't too bad but probably 99.9/100 times I'm gonna pass right over this if I hear it on the radio.

Here is an interesting tune. Can't say I'm too much of a fan though. It is an instrumental for the most part but with a band name like "The Aquabats" I get the immediate sense that it's a comedic band and after listening to several of their songs that becomes even more obvious imo. The beat is mildly catchy and I kinda see what they were shooting for here but I honestly think there is much else going on here that is just noise unfortunately. Then again it's a kind of feeling I have with most Ska music but certainly not in some cases as you'll see further into the ranking.

Finally caught up on everything. So far my favorite is T.I.M.E. and it's not even close. I think I actually love this track. At first because the concept of an overly dramatic version of YMCA seemed hilarious.

Then on a nostalgic level as it vaguely reminds me of a song someone that was very important to me showed me, once... a cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman that was very slow, almost lounge like. I've never been able to remember enough about the cover to actually track it down (there is a very high chance it's Richard Cheese's mash-up of "Enter Sandman" and "Mr. Sandman", but the memory is too vague for me to be positive). Not exactly the same thing, no, but it's a nice memory even if it's unrelated.

And finally, as Mana says, once you realize how powerful the lyrics truly are. It's very hard to judge YMCA on its own merits, as it's basically a parody of itself and so infamous. Once you strip away the disco and the costumes, what you're left with is unexpectedly amazing. I'm rather glad that I don't have to try to rank every song, because I don't think I want to know how highly I'd wind up scoring this track. Even if I wind up hating every other nomination, it was worth listening to the songs in this topic just to discover this one.

Won't try to give write-ups to everything else (in part because I don't want to flood the topic with posts, in part because I truly doubt I could do 1,300 write-ups), but I'll say I also enjoyed Damascus and The Friends of Mr. Cairo. Silence wasn't exactly my thing, but I appreciate getting a chance to listen to it.

I think it would be pretty hard to not guess that this was from the 70's as it has that unique rock sound so many 70's songs have. I don't really feel like it is anything that is worth recommending though for that reason since there is so much generic stuff from that era to wade through. It really is a decade where the best songs easily rise to the top of the list imo. Sadly as you can guess, this tune is nowhere near that league of songs imo but it's an ok listen all the same.

Ah. 80's Pop music. There definitely isn't enough of this in the world. (Joke). Anyway, I guess a bunch of people really like this tune but it's a bit generic to me. Thankfully I won't have to use that line to explain away the lower nominations for very long but I do mean it. I didn't listen to this in the 80's so maybe that's why it doesn't have a nostalgic effect on me that some folks have explained in my research. I think the whole song kinda holds onto a Disco vibe though and it wasn't terrible to listen to. There could have been much worse nominations from the 80's I'm sure.

Not the Chemical Brothers tune I'm most familiar with (actually I think there are like 2 songs that I have ever really listened to tbh). This one here has a steady beat but I feel like it really doesn't go anywhere memorable. I know technically most beats are redundant but this one really feels like it after a couple of play throughs. Never been a big fan of high pitched instumentation either so this loses some effect on me there once that comes in. It might be that I'm partially deaf but by the end of the song it turns into godawful noise imo.

At least your next one won't come up for a little bit (I looked ahead) but yeah, bummer for your list atm. Anyway, 90's Hip Hop wasn't ever something I really listened to growing up. The days of Fresh Prince inspired tunes largely passed me by when I was in Junior High. This must be a popular band from back in the day though since it scored decently on the Top 100 scale and if you listen closely they name drop like crazy in this song. Snoop and Dre are just a couple of the names that come up.

Although in my recollection I feel like it came from a fighting game like Virtua Fighter or something. Maybe I passed by a Demo at one of the many game stores I have visited over the years? As for the tunes popularity it becomes tough to decide an appropriate score since there are few places that rate video game music on the internet unfortunately.
