Pursuit of the perfect truth (of line counts), that is.

Here's all the line count data, if anyone wants to see it:

E1-5 is seriously underrated

it has some real problems - I particularly hate the segment where they go outside and figure out the trick with the lights because it serves NO purpose and doesn't connect to the rest of the crime in any way - but there's a lot of cool shit in it

I don't even think the Alba confrontation is that bad although it is pretty comical how many times he tries to leave. And the drop of blood on the japanese flag is probably the most amazing coincidence in the series ever and that's saying a *lot*. but I still think it's fine

Yeah, E1-5 feels kinda disjointed at times, and that's probably the biggest example. Pretty much the only real takeaway from that segment is learning about the auto-refilling pool that they used to put out the fires (which you later use to piece together how Shih-na crossed into Babahl without anyone knowing), but it's not like you couldn't have learned about that some other way.

And yeah, I don't think the Alba showdown is as bad as people make it out to be. He actually becomes a legit opponent once Lang strips him of his title because he can't just stonewall you with his authority anymore. The last couple of testimonies are really good, but I can't blame anyone for being worn down and ready for the case to be over at that point.

I like Alba because he legitimately feels like a tough nut to crack on multiple fronts. Some solidly challenging testimonies to break through (I generally thought AAI was pretty easy most of the time), and a diplomat is actually a pretty darn fitting "hard to pin something on" character for a prosecutor. I feel the game makes me believe that I could actually win this but it would be hard as hell, which is kinda the space you want to be in. I also quite liked how lots of little details I was wondering about from earlier in the case would be relevant.

I mean I still think it could be shorter/more streamlined (and yeah the light trick part is pointless) but I feel that about basically every epic case except perhaps DD's. (Well, 4-4 isn't that long either; I just hate 4-4.)

And he's a better character than the one in AAI2, yes! (He could have been better if we'd seen more of his good side, mind - both situations suffer from us not actually seeing them except in their stated role of president/war hero. To really nail these characters you kinda have to talk about background setting which is not something Ace Attorney is very good at to be frank.)

Judge seems like a lock for #3. Could Apollo overtake Maya?

I am like, 95% confident Apollo will overtake Maya. He has 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 5-2, 6-2, and 6-5 as the playable character, 5-3 as the assistant, a major role in 5-4 and 5-5, and a minor role in 5-1 and 5-6. This is more than enough, especially since 6-5 is basically two cases. Apollo 6-5 is going to rank #1 in line count EASILY.

Maya does have 6-6 as an assistant and a substantial number of lines in 6-3 as well as a tiny bit of 6-5, but I don't think it's enough when Apollo is the main character in effectively 8 cases and his 5-3 will eat Maya's 6-6 anyway.

I sort of wonder if I would have been right about Gumshoe > Maya if this were counted by number of text boxes as opposed to number of lines, which is what I was thinking before this started - so like, Gumshoe's long case explanations would be multiple lines, not just one. That was a big part of my calculus. Now that I look at how many lines Maya gets from being the assistant I'm kind of surprised Gumshoe is this close!
