Welcome back to another Gauntlet Crew ranking topic! It's been a while for me personally, as this is the first project I've participated in well over a year now. But I'm glad to be back at it, and what better way to return than with a return to how we started these projects! We've ranked Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, Anime and even a set of films similar to this very list. Now we have 40 more animated films we'll be ranking from worst to best. These are ordered by their release date. This animation project covers films that appeared on no other lists as usual; in this case, many of these films are newer than the projects that originally would have contained them so we've returned to give them their proper due. In addition, some films that didn't make the cut for other lists are here as well. They are as follows:

As usual, this works by adding up the numbers given to a film by a gauntlet crew member. For instance, if one of us were to rank a movie #4 and another were to rank it #24, that movie would have a score of 28 combined. I've added up all 11 participants rankings of all 40 films to come up with this final list! Here is that list now, with the movies they correspond to hidden.

Stifled: Ok. Ok. I get it. There is a lot wrong with this movie. There is an uncomfortable amount of product placement going on here. But you know what? I kind of liked it anyway. I found the main characters to be compelling and interesting. Their interactions kept the movie watchable, which I am thankful for. Crazy smile lady was actually pretty funny. I would gladly watch this 500 more times before I would ever give Sausage Party another go.

Traviss opinion: Bright colors win the day. Travis was hooked on this one. He liked meowing at the cat emoji.

charon: Call me crazy, but I didn't see what all the fuss was over. Is this a good film? Of course not, but it isn't particularly an offensive one either unless you just can't stand the "source material" it uses here. This is a pretty typical story about a character that just wants to be himself and doesn't fit in with the societial norms. It's sort of a stupid concept for a film; basically, we got to see what would happen if Disney really messed up the Wreck-It Ralph universe. The main reason I can't bring myself to loathe this film is because the characters just aren't particularly unlikable. Now, they aren't that likable either but there doesn't exist that cringeworthy moment from me. Even the poop jokes don't really upset me that much, since I expected they were coming anyway.

JONA: This movie is so lazy and blatantly made for the sake of money that its honestly kind of fascinating and entertaining. Dont get me wrong, this movie is still trash but this is probably the lowest ranked movie which I would recommend watching. There are movies Ive ranked higher than this that I dont think are worth watching. It is an experience everyone should have.

Snake: Theres a sort of dark genius to its terribleness. It almost feels at times thats in on the joke but maybe Im giving it too much credit. The movie plays like a 90-minute long advertisement and they chose literally the most bland emojis it could muster up to follow along on its plot. See, I kinda liked what they did with emojis like Smiler, and characters more along the lines of that mightve been okay. Most of all though, I was surprised (and disappointed) that The Emoji Movie honestly wasnt even that bad as it was hyped up to be. Its quite standard fare actually, a bit boring, not much going on, but not total trash.

Ermine: This movie started off horribly and I could barely keep any interest in the first 30 minutes and I think the saddest thing is that it gets worse and worse as it goes on. None of the characters are likeable, not even remotely and nearly every "joke" is so god damn cringe worthy that I was actively trying to turn off my brain so I didn't have to process what was actually being said. The subplot with Jean's parents was written so fucking terribly and I cannot believe that it's still a thing that happened. The conflict generated to later show that Jean's dad also malfunctions like his son was one of the biggest jokes in the movie. Sadly, it's clear the writers didn't intend it to be humorous. Even then, I was MAYBE considering just letting it off with like a 1/10 score or something but nope! They then just had to go ahead and ruin "Feel This Moment", a song I actually enjoy. Now I will never ever be able to listen to that song without thinking of that god awful "dancing" scene. Thanks Emoji Movie!

"Women are always coming up with stuff that Men are taking credit for!" Fuck off movie, why in the living hell is this an actual line in the movie. I literally want to punch whoever wrote this line, in the face.


Inviso: Im really disappointed that this isnt the worst movie on the list. Hell, its not the worst on the list, even if I discount the movie Im PROBABLY being too harsh on at the bottom spot, but I dont care. That being said, this is shilling trash and fuck this movie. It is one, long advertisement for the internet? Because we needed that for some reason? Its stupid, its not funny, its cheesy, and it doesnt even try outside of purely surface-level comedy that just falls flat more every time. Ill give credit for the animation being decentbut thats it. The entire story is lazy writing, and there are far too many obvious twists that everyone can see comingits just really really bad.

Johnbobb: Follow a couple Emojis as they explore the apps in an average middle schoolers phone. Like Just Dance? And Dropbox? And Candy Crush? Maybe Im just out of touch with the youth, but I feel like thats not the actual issue here. I went into this expecting this to be bad. Everyone expected it to be bad. But what surprised me was how boring it was. I wanted to joke about how offensively bad everything was with people, but I literally fell asleep with half an hour left in the movie. It tried to be Inside Out and Wreck-It Ralph but without ever bothering to put in the work. There are worse movies (even worse ones on this very list) but seldom do we get blatant cash-grabs like this one.

red: I don't know that this movie was even as outright bad as I was expecting. It was just the most generic movie in any of our lists. Someone clearly went, "hey, you know what we can make money off of, emoji's" and then slapped together a generic childrens movie plot on top of them. Cant fit in main character meets too cool for the rest of the world girl with generic sidekick dude find their place in phone Inside Out world. The scenes outside the phone are some of the most pathetic I've ever seen. No one put any effort into this pile of trash whatsoever.

Karo: In a world inside some kid's smartphone there's like a city of emoticons where a 'meh' emoji decides he's a special snowflake and that he should be able to make any face that he wants to instead of doing his fucking job. He then goes on the run with an incredibly obnoxious talking hand and they have adventures in other parts of the phone which are basically just shameless in-movie advertisements for things like Just Dance and Candy Crush.

Never will you see a comedy that is so lacking in humor, with jokes that fall flat this often. It's not so bad it's funny, it's so bad it's even MORE bad. In an example of the film's 'humor', Gene talks to these monkey emojis and they say they have business to attend to. What kind of business, you say? Monkey business! HAHAHajhahagaGFGAah! If you are one of the three people on earth that actually laughed, you might be able to tolerate this movie. For the rest of us, we are content to bang our foreheads against a brick wall until the blood flows freely.

Genny: Doubtless, at least 3 other gauntleteers will submit a clever writeup in the form of a series of poo emoji so I'll break that mold and try- operative word there- to form a legitimate dissertation as to why this movie is literally shit.

Let's start with the things that aren't the absolute worst, a short list to be sure. The animation is not appalling to look at. It's low budget yes, but the characters and settings don't look like they were slapped together by a team of amateurs with nothing better to do on a Tuesday night. There were actually some fairly impressive water effects during the Paris vacation scene. A few of the jokes landed for me, like the humor of the internet trolls though the decision to imply that every troll is just a program and not an actual person was... questionable at best. Shockingly I've run out of good things to say.

I was going to mention that some of the settings looked okay, but there were far too few of them and really upon thinking about it the world of Textopolis was ultimately dull and uninspired. Compare it to the thriving setting of Ralph and Vanellope's arcade and you'll realize there's nothing of substance there. Some kid's phone just makes for a boring locale, and I came away from the movie not caring about his relationship with his crush nor for any of the emojis within his cellular device.

Gene and High Five might have the worst chemistry of any two animated characters I've ever experienced. Any time I began to like Five for something even remotely funny he said or did he would immediately turn around and say or do something obnoxious and negate it. As for Gene his character growth is unbelievable. By that I mean he befriends High Five and falls in lust with Jailbreak at a ridiculous pace that's too fast to follow or believe when they in turn do nothing to warrant strong feelings.

Speaking of the characters, I know I mentioned that they don't look "cheap", but they do look lazy. There's nothing creative about their designs, but I guess that's to be expected given what they're based on. Still something original could have been done here. Instead this movie will go down as Sony Animation's tragic cash grab- a marker as to how low one company can sink. I haven't even mentioned the plot yet. Nutshell version: it's bad.

Navigating the phone to find the Cloud was just an excuse to gain ad revenue and pimp out certain programs and games. It got so on the nose that by a certain point we needed rhinoplasty. Also somebody please tell me how taking a phone off a wiping device automatically restores everything that's been deleted. Just because the wipe process was interrupted doesn't mean everything just comes back. If anything all but the last application- the one the deletion was halted during- would need to be downloaded again. Finally, I absolutely cannot stand how a good 70% of animated movies feel like they need to end with some kind of dance party or dance off. It's one thing if that was a huge part of the movie's theme, but to just give up on plot and throw in COLORS AND MOVEMENT for the kids to do the fucking stanky leg to at the end is more than I can bear. In short... poo emoji/10.

It's not my lowest film, but it also had a minor chance of escaping my bottom 5 depending on a few later movies. Don't have a ranking just yet, I plan to watch all except the Disney ones before the end of this topic. Guess I also forgot to try and set up a mini-project during.

Anyway, Emoji write-up:

There were times where this movie was funny. The rest of the time of the movie it was not funny. None of the jokes they repeated got me to smile at any point, let alone give off a courtesy laugh. This was a movie with a bad premise, and a bad gimmick to it. Literally made your main character supposed to be the meh emoji so they could have a lot of meh jokes regarding his parents. That was awful. Also really, the only character in need of deletion was smiley with her ugly ass face.
