same reason they keep including hot springs scenes

they just really don't like change for some reason

Part of the reason I enjoyed DDLC even before the twists is that it was like a Japanese VN, but with a totally different feel to it. Kinda feel the same about Voltron, which is like a mecha series but without the usual cliches.

Anyway, chapter 7 of Trails the 3rd complete! Gehenna wasn't as bad as its reputation would suggest...! It was interesting to see Kevin have to face "demons" from his past, including his own mother. The final hurdle was Weissmann, who is still striving to create the Uberweissmann (I crossed ubermensch with Weissmann in case you didn't catch that; there was also an episode of Friends where Ross uses a detergent called Uberweiss, which made me think to make this joke in the first place), even in death. Thankfully, it unlocks Kevin's new S-Craft, which is super effective against demons, so Weissmann finally did something useful for once! Of course, he could've been more useful in explaining where exactly the Aureole went, but at least he explained the current state of Phantasma is due to it needing a new master after it vanished, so it chose Kevin because of his Stigma.

Eventually, everyone breaks through the gates of Gehenna and rescues them. We find out that Rufina is waiting for us in an expansive wasteland outside of the planes. Tita comes up with the idea to use the Arseille to get there, and Celeste makes it clear we absolutely can never come back once we leave. There's also a new area in Gehenna available, which explicitly exists for power leveling. Perhaps the last Star Door is there or something. Speaking of doors, I was very confused because the list of Achievements says there are six Moon Doors, but when you click on the list of Moon Doors on the overhead map display, it only lists five. I decided to go back and check the Moon Doors to see if I missed something extra, and apparently, you can re-enter the first Moon Door with Tita and Agate. How the heck was I supposed to figure this out? I guess they just assume you're going to check doors again after you complete them or something, but what reason do I have to do that unless it's a mini-game door that has multiple difficulties? It'd be nice if it changed the description of the door in the menu or something, at least! Well, whatever. I'll do that later.

Anyway, we get some cool new music in the Hermit's Garden. Everyone forgives Kevin, and Renne even explains it was probably for the best that Phantasma chose him to be the new master because it was going to choose someone and it could've been a lot worse. Kevin and Joshua have a really cool conversation about how Kevin is jealous of Joshua for escaping from the darkness of his past now when he wasn't before, and Joshua speculates it's because Kevin never thought he could come back to the light, but now he does. Seriously, Joshua is the best.

Oh yeah, I do remember it saying Part 1, but yeah, I just assumed the story continued in another Door instead of in the same one. By the time Agate joined the party, I'd totally forgotten about that. Still feels like poor communication either way.

I think this is a misconception and it's "just" that their availability becomes more erratic. But if you want to play it safe, feel free.

Trails 3: Spear of Ur pretty cool too. Kevin's S-Crafts the best. I noticed you never returned to Moon Door 1 ever since you got Agate and was monitoring the situation just didn't know how to handle it. Not sure if you'd consider telling you to return to the door as a hint. I actually cracked and did mention it around the time you reached the Black Ark but edited it out almost immediately because I still didn't know if you'd want to be told. The Part 1 thing is the hint I guess.

I think pyre mentioned it earlier, but if you want to know the location of the final Star Door: You're correct that it's in the "power level" area.

Well, you can figure out how many of each door are left just by looking at their lists on the overhead map display (since even if you haven't found the door, there's still a blank slot for it) or by checking the Achievements thing, which is where my confusion arose because there was a contradiction in amounts.

spoilers unlike most B8ers I actually honor the results of polls

Trails the 3rd is proof of this because it won the previous poll of "Which game that I've never played should I play next?"

Nier Automata won the "Which game should I purchase next?" poll and now I own that game

The best thing about Vanilla's upgrades over Golden is that the upgraded Persona removes their elemental weakness. Golden actually changed that.

Golden also changed the order in which your party members gain new abilities. Tanking a deathblow for the protagonist used to be the very first thing they learn, but I guess they figured that was too broken so they moved it until much later!

In Trails the 3rd, I completed the final Moon Door. Seriously, Erika is so great. I was kinda looking forward to a duel with Dan, but alas! Agate and Tita are pretty excellent and have a lot of chemistry as a duo, so it's always fun to see them together like this.

I'm slowly working my way down through the Abyss. Defeated two of the bosses so far and got two Zemurian Ores. I guess I'll be able to trade these for ultimate weapons like in SC, and maybe I'll get enough for each party member this time! I'm guessing the final Star Door is down here somewhere, too.

Final Trails the 3rd update for the night, but I finished the Abyss. That final fight was kind of hilarious. I don't know what it is about Wheel of Time, but it ignores Shining Poms' otherwise great defense, so I was just spamming Kevin's CP boosting Craft to keep pumping up Estelle's CP and just took them out one at a time with that. Also found the last Star Door, which is another Renne door, sadly. Found the last tournament invitation, too, so I can finish off the Sun Doors for good. That'll all have to wait until tomorrow though.

In Trails the 3rd, I finished off the last two Star Doors, so I've got them all now. Watching that Renne Star Door almost felt like I was playing Umineko or Higurashi there for a second. It was rather well done. And then in the final Star Door, we finally figure out what happened to the Aureole. Campanella snatched it and then delivered it to the Grandmaster of Ouroboros. Still doesn't explain why Weissmann suddenly lost control of it at the end of SC, but eh, whatever. Trails has set up a rather large universe with all these Anguis and the Grandmaster, as well as a bunch of other possible Enforcers out there. Makes me wonder if they'll ever really be able to tie it all together and bring it to a fitting conclusion at some point.

Once that was done, we took off on the Arseille toward Rufina. After piddling around for the entire game, Gilbert finally did something cool until the game decided to remind us all that he is still, in fact, Gilbert. Eventually, we reach the final dungeon, the appropriately named Phantasmagoria. Getting some really strong Ultimecia's Castle vibes from this place, which is a very good thing. I wish the game had given me some sort of warning that this was going to be a split-party dungeon that would require me to use all of my party members so I could've invested some sepith and money into getting them up-to-date equipment and quartz. Oh well, I made sure to split Kevin, Estelle, Joshua, and Kloe up between all four parties, so there should be one well equipped person in each group. Plus, the game gives you plenty of equipment and one monument along the way to help you out, and you get so much experience from the random battles that aren't very difficult that it all kinda balances out in the end. Zin went from being like level 115 to level 138 by the time we reached the end. I've only finished one so far, and the gate ended with us about to face a golden Pater-Mater (and I had Renne in my party there, too, so I wonder if it recognizes who's in your party and gives you an appropriate last boss or if I just got lucky. The game recognizes who's in your party and gives you weapons for who's in your party during these split-party dungeons, too, so who knows! Maybe every party fights one of these things).

Let me see if I can remember my party configurations.

Kevin/Ries/Julia/Mueller
Estelle/Zin/Renne/Anelace
Joshua/Agate/Schera/Josette
Kloe/Tita/Olivier/Richard

Yeah, that looks right.

Trails 3: Yeah, Star Door 15 handles its subject matter well, but man, even when I was broadly aware of the topic it was going to broach, you just aren't really ready for it. That door was heavily censored in the PSP version in Japan. dowolf pointed out the differences when I was playing, and IIRC it was that they just largely omitted most of the door. Star Door 14 is really cool, love the glimpse into Ouroborus and the Anguis/Gradmaster. Also lol at a couple of the Anguis just calling out Weissmann for being an awful person when the Grandmaster feels guilty about how everything turned out.

Re: The Aureole at the end of SC. Do you mean when Weissmann went final form (The Merciless Savior part of the fight when it "upgrades" him further) or when it peaces out after? I don't recall an exact explanation from the games and only vague ideas that I think I heard elsewhere that I can't attach proof too. That said, I will say that the Aureole clearly did have a will of its own based on what it was doing with Liber-Ark so I don't think we can rule out it just started acting on its own, first turning Weissmann into its personal defense system and then later just bailing when that didn't work. Although, since it was apparently always in Weissmann's staff maybe that had something to do with it, since the staff was provided to him by the Grandmaster.

aww yes Phantasmagoria so good. Love the music there so much. Also, the chest messages are really great and emotional, especially after they were intentionally silent during the whole Gehenna portion of the game.

No Nightmare Arena though? =(

All right, time for the Trails the 3rd wrap up just in time to close out this topic. The last boss fights for the other three parties were pretty fun. Not too tough either. Got to test out Tita's Orbal Gear, which was pretty fun. Now the actual last boss (which turns out to be Kevin's Stigma itself somehow) was a bit more annoying, mostly because of those enemies it summoned that could inflict Vanish on your party members. Grail Sphere definitely came in handy here, and I was actually kind of glad I brought Julia, too, since she has that Craft that lets her do a Max Guard on herself, as well as the buff that ups speed and strength on everyone else. Wishing I had brought someone other than Mueller since he was just brute force and nothing else, but oh well. I got it done with relatively little trouble, just some minor annoyances.

The ending was pretty nice, and it almost feels like it's speaking to the player about the characters themselves since this could be the last time we ever see them or it might not, but we're happy and sad at the same time to have reached the end of this trilogy. The Estelle/Joshua/Renne part definitely got to me, I have to admit. Tita's speech was really touching, too.

Okay, time for a massive inequality!

Joshua > Estelle > Kloe > Erika > Agate > Josette > Tita > Kevin > Kilika > Cassius > Loewe > Olivier > Kurt (BY MY ARTS) > Ries > Lila > Theresa > Nial > Maybelle > Zin/Zane > Julia > Richard > Professor Russell > Anelace > Queen Alicia > Campanella > Philip > Renne > Cid > Lechter > Aina > Kyle > Schera > Mueller > Ragnard > Dorothy > Walter > Celeste > Murdock > Dan > Rufina > Lady Carnelia > Hilda > Jill > Don > Bleublanc > Morgan > Gilbert > Elnan > Dean Collins > Mayor Klaus > Jean > Lugran > Hans > Lucciola > Weissmann > Carna > Dunan > Cochrane > Dalmore > Grant > Crainagh > The Ravens > Amalthea

Certifiably and undeniably 100% accurate for right now

and now for the update to the female character rankings

Nagato > Maya > Yakumo > Kurisu > Chizuru > Estelle > Yukiko > Fina > Aqua > Makoto > Shoko > Mitsuru > Yui > Takano > Yachiyo > Shiori > Eru > Wagatsuma > Ritsu > Akane > Pepper > Brawne > Amy > Rin > Namine > Mitsuha > Peach > Botan > Sophia > Yurippe > Mikasa > Eureka > Art3mis > Valentine > Mizuno > Zelda > Vera > Elizabeth > Yuri > Cora > Kotori
