Booted up Valkyria Chronicles PC this morning with the intention of replaying it before 4 comes out. I've never played 2 or 3, but I figure if I can maintain a chapter every 3-4 days pace I'll be caught up by the time 4 hits in September. Then I can safely ignore it while plunging head first into DQ and waiting for a PC release of VC4.

Also, god, I picked the absolute worst time to grab AC: Origins (a sprawling open world game with like 100 quests between main and side stories) and Vermintide 2 (L4D game with loot and some persistence, begging you to play just one more mission), because over the next month there's the release of two games I Kickstarted (Battletech, Pillars of Eternity 2), two new games in series I love (Yakuza 6, State of Decay 2), two Overwatch events, and the much-delayed Ys 8 PC release. HM posted his games of summer a while back and I'm probably gonna be working through these games right up until September when the cycle begins anew.

beat invisible inc on the starter difficulty after about 7 hours. cool stuff, but i do think the challenge wasn't really there to produce much tension and drama for me. i do appreciate the way the game explains why it's recommended to begin on that level. also love the customization available regarding the exact difficulty settings.

will get started on the next difficulty level and hope it's exciting enough! think i can get through it and the "way it's meant to be played" difficulty before next weekend and god of war hits because hoo boy am i excited for that because of the high praise.

thought i was done for multiple times. used up all 3 of my rewinds, had an agent go down, got all the way up to the highest alert level, had a platoon of guards up my ass, and still managed to get both my agents out with the stolen goods.

goddamn i get why people love this game now

It feels like a surprisingly busy summer of video games, doesnt it? So many good games coming out to play! I want all the fun details of Yakuza 6 as you go through it! The screenshots, the anecdotes, the karaoke minigames!

Good news! The SEGA Mini might be a total bust of an announcement, but fortunately, the Switch is getting classic ports by M2, maybe even some Saturn and Dreamcast games. This is a fair trade off. Maybe, as long as the prices are fair!

Also, Valkyria Chronicles 1 is coming to Switch at the same time as VC4. Its eShop only, but excellent news for the few, the proud, the non-Windows PC owners out there.

VC1 is on PS3 and PS4!

I would also like to emphasize that right now September is shaping up to be Yakuza Kiwami 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Sunless Skies, Dragon Quest XI, Valkyria Chronicles 4, and maybe Forza Horizon 4?

With the NBA playoffs on, I needed a switch game to play since I'll be hanging out on the couch a lot, so I bought Disgaea 5. I played like an hour or 2 of Disgaea 3 a while back, and haven't touched one since.

Game is surprisingly addictive, I'm liking it so far. Don't care for the story or characters, but the grind is fun, and there are lots of ways to improve each character. I've also been digging Arms, I've been playing a few matches here and there. Not a game I expected to like when I got the Switch, so I'm glad it worked out. Feels like it would be a blast to play local, but unfortunately, local MP opportunities are pretty rare for me, and when they do happen, people want to play Mario Kart BOOOO.

Meanwhile, continuing to chug along on Ni No Kuni 2 and Far Cry 5. Far Cry 5 remains fun when I pick it up, but the story isn't good enough for me to be totally invested/desperate to finish. But yeah, all the same stengths. Great mission design, and just a gorgeous world.

Ni No Kuni 2 actually is starting to get a little harder! I was way underleveled for the 3rd major city, so I'm going back and seeing if I can find some secret dungeons to go through. The Kingdom Building expands more than I ever anticipated, and it's really great. Once again, story is a pretty big weakness, and probably the only thing keeping me back from feeling like I have to get in there and get it done.

I had 0 desire to play God of War, but the reviews are sucking me in. Once I'm through 1 of these massive ass games, thats probably my next pick up. I'm also super excited to play "A Way Out" once my wife's school stuff clears up.

Tried out the new Battlefront II Ewok Hunt mode. Surprisingly intense as a stormtrooper. Died too close to the end to figure out the Ewok side of things.

Beat Red Dead Redemption. Game is really good but the gameplay and open world has to carry it a lot because once you go to Mexico the story really loses its way. The third act is super slow and the characters cannot compare to the previous ones. I was hoping when it became Marston Rancher that the game would go full ranch sim but I was disappointed.

The ending was neat. Did not think I would end up playing as the son in the end. Kind of sucks that you cannot play the post game as John. Jack is kind of annoying. Then again, I think I probably saw all I want to see in the game anyway.

I will check out the Undead Nightmare at some point. I think I heard that was decent?

Undead Nightmare is a fun time. Give it a shot! The dedication Rockstar had in transforming the entire world into a zombie nightmare is super admirable. There are a couple of tedious missions, but it's worth pushing through to see it to the end.

(I know how you could feel this way, actually. The progression, the sense of purpose, the level designit isnt as immediately strong or focused. I think Odyssey lives and breathes on how incredible its mechanics are, rather than the level design or platforming challenges.)

it's got a great aesthetic. it feels good to control. I love watching the kids play it, they're genuinely enthusiastic about it. but when I play it I keep waiting for the game to happen.

The joy of Odyssey is truly what you make of it. By that, I mean how much fun you enjoy running and jumping through fun themed worlds, occasionally stumbling upon moons or the odd mini-challenge. If you get life from trying to make stupidly impossible jumps that serve no purpose other than to do it, this is your game, haha. Odyssey is just a super fun game to sit down and play, with no pressure for an underlying point. Its the other side of the coin to Mario 3D World.

The exception to all this is New Donk City.

I agree completelya handful of more worlds with the depth, variety and fun of NDC would have taken it to (even greater) heights. That, plus Darker Side of the Moonwhat a joy that whole production was.

icon, i think the game you're looking for in odyssey can be found in the challenge rooms that are akin to sunshine's! too bad most of the best ones are in the post-game.

i've only played this and 3d world of the 3d mario games, but the experiences i've had with both are just so vastly different that i can't really compare. played odyssey solo and 3d world with friends from start to finish.

but having seen all of steal my sunshine, i can say with certainty that super mario sunshine is the worst 3d mario game.

anyway, god of war! seems like i'm the only one here that has it? literally just got it and downloading the day 1 patch as i type this. i'm hoping it's as good as the reviews say, but i'm also glad i've tempered my expectations with the gow talk on the bombcast and waypoint radio.

I've played all of Odyssey. Every Mario game has extensive and difficult post-game content. The difference here is that the run up in Odyssey is so slight.

Battletech feels great so far. The way you play with positioning in Mech v Mech combat is so satisfying to pull off.

I feel much better about Ni No Kuni 2 the farther I get in. After the 2nd world in particular, the game gets totally opened up, the kingdom management gets quite deep,and the difficulty gets way ramped up. It's a lot easier to get into the side content and building up your kingdom, when the gear/stats/other bonuses feel like they matter. I had today off, and pretty much played it all day. I really got into it. I pretty much did side content the whole time.

When I try and trigger the next main quest, it tells me I won't be able to play freely for a while, so I held off, but it appears like some more significant things are finally about to happen with the plot, which I'm excited about.

I'm through 2/3 of the Far Cry 5 areas now. My enthusiasm for the game is slowly getting diminished a little bit, it feels like the game is going to wrap up just a bit before it wears out its welcome. Still enjoying it whenever I pick it up.

Sort of getting tired of Disgaea 5. Game isn't quite my style. Kind of a bummer, but OH WELL. Definitely going to pick up God of War once I finish one of the games above. Also really interested in picking up Yakuza 0 and getting into that series once things get a little slower game wise, but I still have interest in A Way Out, and I'm picking up DKC: Tropical Freeze in a few weeks, so it might be a while till that happens.
