Board 8 > eaed and his Wife play Final Fantasy IX

So my wife and I have for a couple of years have been playing Square Enix games together. Typically how it goes is I play and she watches. She also occasionally plays and then backs down during boss fights because she gets nervous lol. But nevertheless, that's what we do.

Preamble: my wife is not a gamer lol. She tries she enjoy Mario games and things like that but she's not very good at them other than Mario kart where she is real good for some reason but she never really did the JRPG thing besides watch her older brother play.

To this point, she and I have played Kingdom Hearts 1, CoM, 2, BBS, and FFXIII, FFX, FFXII, and FFXV.

Now, don't pick on my wife but this is her ranking to this point:

Final Fantasy XIII - She liked the characters and their growth, also, I skipped ahead so she missed most of the lull that is Pulse and it probably helped the pace for her. She also liked the story because it was good without being too complicated like Kingdom Hearts passed the first one. I also think the "first final fantasy" theory probably is in effect here.

Final Fantasy XV (she liked the gameplay. This was the game that she felt the most comfortable playing. She was also a fan of the truly open world and being able to advance the story if she wanted to or being able to just hang out.)

So the rest of the games she says she has a small negative to them for her.

Kingdom Hearts - The story was interesting and was fun. The downside was it was too corny for her at times. We actually played KH series first so she has gotten better at playing and did not play as much then. She also didn't like how it was copying the movies so much.

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep - she thought this was the best iteration. The story was interesting though complex. She's a big happy story kind of person so the ending brought her down. Also, basically having to play the game 3 times brought her down too.

Kingdom Hearts II - she liked playing it a lot but she didn't love that all of the world's were basically ports of the movies but and the story was good but if I wasn't there to explain it she is not sure she would have understood.

Final Fantasy XII - She said that this could have been her favorite because the story was very intriguing for her but the gameplay was so damn slow that she often forgot the little details in between and that really made it feel separated. But she did enjoy being able to play it herself.

Final Fantasy X - this is the one she is going to get the most flak for but this was her least favorite Final Fantasy to this point. She did not like Tidus. She thought he was annoying she didn't really get his story that much and finally thought he was a crybaby. So she looked to the side characters.
she found Rikku to be annoying.
She thought Lulu was a know it all and kept saying "put your boobs away."
Kimhari "TALK ALREADY, He's annoying"
She liked Wakka at first but then didn't like that he was a racist.
Auron, she said shr thought he was cool but then she didn't like that it felt like he thought he was cool.
So the only character that she truly like was Yuna then.
And then none of the Big moments went over that well with her. So the whole thing never really got clicking for her. So that stinks

Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories - She didn't love the story, she didn't love the gameplay and the whole thing kind of just fell flat for her.

Alright, enough preamble. In this topic, I am going to post her reactions while we play. So don't expect a Robazoid like explanation of events as I go. Lol

We started this game with her knowing nothing other than that me and my childhood best friend beat this together. I was also anticipating it to be two players like when I played the ps1 version and the ps1 classic version but I was wrong and that was disappointing. So other than that here is what we had for the start.

H8tSo when the game started that I made sure to tell her that this was going to be more of a traditional medieval final fantasy as compared to the futuristic ones she has played to this point (13,15 and even to a lesser extent 12).

The game open she seems into it and then but then immediately reacts to "why the heck does he have a tail?". I played coy and said I don't know (I really may not know. I don't actually recall there being a reason). So she said "well that's weird." (She may be a little unfiltered at times being 9 months pregnant lol)

So the group goes in and talks about the plan and I accidentally clicked on the kidnap Queen Brahne option and she said "weren't you paying attention, stupid! (Playfully of course)"

Jump ahead to playing as Vivi. She says "aww he's cute. But why are we playing as him. Don't we have a job to do?" So I explained that the beginning here is going to start in seperate directions and come together.

So Vivi turns in his fake ticket and she goes "poor guy."

I start to jump rope and she tells me to stop wasting time! Lol

So we start walking around and the guy calls Vivi a klutz and she says "why is everyone so mean to him!"

So the scene with Puck happens and he asks if we wanna be his slave to go to the show. And she says?
"Why the heck would we wanna be your slave?!"

So we say no and I've never actually said no so we walk around for a little to sew what happens and then we go back and she says "I told you I don't wanna be his slave" and I explained that we have to be.

So they go towards the steeple and go towards the castle and Puck and Vivi introduce himself and she says:
"How can you make fun of ViVi when you name Puck!"

So the cut scene for the opening of the show starts and they show Brahnne and Garnet bland she says:

"Oh that's creepy! (Looking at queen Brahnne)"
"She looks depressed. I guess kidnapping her won't phase her too much"

Baku does the opening and explanation of the play and she says:

"(The play and it's title) It sounds terrible!"

So that battle happens in the play and she thinks it is silly that they have to Special Effects option and she says "that's silly."

Finally, the sword fight between Blank and Zidane (of which we weren't sure it was Zi-Daan or Zi-Dain) takes place and she says that looks fun and does it and gets a 79 out 100 and it says Queen Brahnne wasn't impressed and she says "oh what does she know." So I so instead and get 100 out of 100. Naturally she called me a cheater. Lol

Finally, Zorn and Thorn are introduced and they do their saying the same sentence just backwards and forwards and she says "Are they always going to do this" and I just chuckled and said "Yes."

After that they introduce Steiner and that's where we had to stop to put my son to bed. I hope to play a little bit later tonight but we need to clean up after my kiddo.

We played for a little bit. We only got the the part where the forest and Blank gets petrified. We didn't do much else because our son was being fussy. She was happy the moogle Monty made it out okay lol

We just got through the ice cavern. Only three quotes and a story from this:

"Poor moogle is frozen!"
"Is Steiner accusing Zidane of making magical wind that roofied the entire party?! He's insane!"
"Seriously, how much longer is Steiner hanging around? I hate him he's a jerk! I want to push him off the cliff.

eaed: *laughs* why do you want to push him off the cliff?

Wife: Because he just tried to push us off the cliff!

eaed: He's just doing his job!

Wife: Yeah, well he should shut up and just listen to the Princess then.

And thats not even the story lol. Now for the story, they go through the whole process of naming Dagger Dagger. And so they finally get the naming screen and she's like "This is stupid! Who calls themselves Dagger! Wouldn't that be more suspicious?

eaed: We can just call her Garnet!

Wife: No weren't you listening her name can't be Garnet! We'll get caught!

eaed: *laughs* the game isn't gonna stop us!

Wife: No! We can't name her Garnet.

eaed: Well apparently, she wants to be named after an inanimate object what should we call her?

Wife: I don't know.

eaed: Then why don't we just call her Garnet!

Wife: We can't name her Garnet! They told us not to!

eaed: *laughs* Well then what's wrong with calling Dagger?

Wife: that's stupid.

eaed: Fine, we'll call her ... Knife.

Wife: Fine.

eaed: ... okay I was bluffing. Knife is awful!

Wife: Then what the heck are we calling her?

eaed: What's wrong with Garnet?
Wife: We're calling her Lily. It's an inanimate object and an actual name.
Eaed: *laughs* Lily is fine. "

That was a lot harder than it needed to be lol

I went with Mythril the first time I played, since the weapon she was looking at would've been the Mythril Dagger I just spent forever trying to steal and dammit she'd better be in awe of the fine material that sets it apart from a run of the mill dagger.

When I first played the game I ended up naming her Sara, after the princess from FF1. I thought that would be a neat little reference. Needless to say this made a scene later in the game really fucking weird.

Her whole point is she wants to be more bold and aggressive and have a new identity. A WEAPON ,one wielded by the hero, and one she eventually cuts her own hair with to cement that development, is the perfect name.

Not that I'm criticizing your wife, people can name the character's whatever they want, but it is the intended name on purpose.

We played until we got to Lindblum tonight. Nothing to big to report. She thought the scenes of Garnet trying to fit in were cute. Steiner continues to annoy the hell out of her. The thing she was weirded out with was all the Vivi stuff. Real look of concern on her face when Vivi was kidnapped. Then, she when it was revealed that the people of Dali were responsible of making Black Mages was concerning to her to. The best quote she had here was:
"How do the farmers here even have the means to make these Black Mages?"

Frankly, I don't recall how they got the machines. I wanna say it was Kuja but I can't remember that well.

"Why don't these Waltz guys seem like such assholes and these guys are just robots? Are they fake Vivis? Are they vivi clones? Why doesn't Vivi remember anything either?"

Steiner continues to frustrate her. "You are disobeying your majesty by obeying your majesty and he think he is such a good guy for it to!"

I was I could show the look of disgust on her face when Steiner said that he would talk Zidane's sentence down from a hanging lol.

Speaking of looks on her face, absolute shock when Zidane grabbed Garnet's ass lol. It was so funny she was like "woah! Did he just do that?" And I was like yep and laughed! And she goes "I can't believe they put that in there!" It was quite hilarious to watch.

She felt remorse for Vivi when all the black mages were dying for him but then felt happy for him when he got the last shot on Black Waltz 3. (Both in combat and in cut scene)

She laughed pretty good when Steiner punched out the Regent. She seemed intrigued by the introduction of Freya.

"This scene feels a little out of place but okay."

The biggest laugh of the night actually came when Regent tells Garnet how he back a Oglop because Hilda caught him cheating!

"So they made this elaborate story of how he turned into an oglop but this whole time it was really because he cheated on her? That's hilarious and that's what he gets!"

(Note to self, not that I ever would, but don't cheat on my wife lol)

We saved the first chance we got in Lindblum.

yeah, Garnets name scene is weird. I always name the lead female after myself and the lead male after whoever I had a crush on at the time. Though now the hero's name is always my husbands.

My name is Sara. Yeah. I named her after her real name. It means "Princess" so it kind of worked in a funny way.

I also named Robo in Chrono Trigger R66-Y. Lucca hates it and then loves it. LOL.
