I did some of the busy work quests that had me go poking around and fighting enemies because I enjoyed the combat/exploration. I didn't bother with quests that didn't interest me.

The inventory system in the game isn't great.

The areas and music are amazing and I wanna see your reactions to each place.

There are some other things I know you'll post about, but, I figure you should just deal with that when it comes and experience the game naturally.

Slenderman was underwhelming. Not terrible, just a little boring. Went with a psychological horror theme but it just was missing something. Likely held down by the forced PG13 rating.

I watched Silent House last night because my girlfriend saw Elizabeth Olsen and wanted to see it. And I was like "how did a home invasion movie get 42% on Rotten Tomatoes."

And then about halfway through the movie I said "Okay, this is all a continuous shot movie, but that alone can't give it a decent rating." And then three quarters of the way through I said "Okay, so this must have a good ending then."

And the second that things start to go into motion for the ending, I knew exactly what was going to happen in every step and my girlfriend was flipping out and refused to believe I knew everything that was going to happen. Overall, not worth a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes but it was actually a decent watch but I could do without movies that you need to wait until the end for legitimately interesting stuff to happen.

I think I've seen too many horror movies now.

I saw Unsane this weekend. I kind of expected more out of it. It did amazing things with cinematography, but as a movie it was just fine. Didn't wow me or anything. I thought it would be more psychological than it ended up being.

Finally watched Hereditary tonight! Really well done, surprisingly straight-forward and conventional in many areas but it made the really fucked-up parts stand out a lot more which I liked. Toni Collette's performance is one of the horror history books too.

Yes she was brilliant

Charon and I just got back from Summer of '84. Went into this knowing almost nothing about it and it was quite a surprise.

The first 40 minutes or so all I could think was that wow this is trying so hard to be Stranger Things, but it got way darker than that. The tone, the humor, and the theme all ended up seeming very mature. It was a good watch although unfortunately our experience was... compromised by a trio of drunken idiots right in front of us. It wasn't enough to ruin it completely, but I can't help but feel like a lot of it got lost and considering this is a very limited release film we're not going to get the chance to see it in theaters again. Assholes.

I'm really surprised how well this seems to be turning out. Suspiria has the reputation of one of those untouchable classics that should never be remade and it's certainly one of my absolute favorites, but this remake looks promising. I like that it appears to be doing its own thing a little more than most remakes do.

2018 (so far) horror films (that I've seen) ranked:

1. Hereditary - Masterful and with only a few flaws (the ending), this is probably the best horror movie of the last decade.

*Searching - Not a horror film at all, but a great thriller for sure. One of the best films of the last several years.

2. A Quiet Place - A bit overrated out of the gate, but still a solid film. It takes punches early on.

3. The Nun - Disappointing at times, but it is carried by a great atmosphere and always ominous setting.

*Summer of 84: I don't really think this is a horror movie. It's more like a darker version of The Goonies or something. The banter is fun, but some characters lack.

4. Insidious: The Last Key: I'll probably get hate for it, but I viewed this more favorably than some. Great monster design and good enough story.

*Annihilation: I didn't see the hype, I guess. It's also probably not really a horror film. There are some good moments but it's mostly just odd.

5. Winchester: Another film with a strong setting and interesting concept. It doesn't always make sense.

6. Slender Man: Not a great use of the Slender Man property unfortunately. The studio became tied down with the PG-13 rating and it really showed.

7. Unfriended: Dark Web: Not as good as the first, which wasn't all that great either, but was decent. This one explored the concept further but this should be the end of this.

8. Truth or Dare: A strange concept but it held promise, but ultimately peed the bed when it came to delivering on it. Another stupid ending with the villain making shit up.

9. The Strangers: Prey at Night: I didn't see the first one, but this was stupid. I hope the first one wasn't as stupid as this was. One of the few films I truly have nothing positive to comment on.

I did not enjoy cleft lip key fingers as a monster. I thought this movie was really really bad though.

I more or less agree with the rest. I would give Annihiliation a bit more respect though. I thought it had some really strong horror elements at parts.

I think I would put Truth or Dare over Winchester though. Winchester was the most boring movie. My girlfriend and I usually chat it up about movies after we see something but Winchester is so devoid of any depth or intrigue and the plot is just so bland, there was just nothing to discuss.

Truth or Dare was at least horrible and easy to make fun of. I enjoyed it ironically even though the rules keep making no sense and breaking the one rule of Truth or Dare which is you can't dare someone to tell the truth about something. I'd rather watch a Truth or Dare than be bored to death during Winchester. Although Truth or Dare had some really boring parts.

The original The Strangers is actually a master class of horror movies as far as I'm concerned. It does a lot of really good and subtle stuff. It plays it very reserved for the most part so that when it comes time to really hit you hard, it is far more impactful. I highly recommend it. It isn't among the best, but it does everything in a horror movie almost perfectly for the slasher genre.

Oooooh I wanna do this too

The Endless - This is one of my new favorites of all time. An instant classic, superbly directed meta-horror that twists and rethinks the confines of genre tropes with one of the most satisfying build-ups, mysteries, and final acts I think I've ever seen in a film.

Annihilation - Masterful direction, Natalie Portman is great in it, and the body horror is superb.

Revenge - I Spit On Your Grave redone as action-packed feminist exploitation to satisfying effects that you just can't look away from.

Summer of 84 - The kids are great, Rich Sommer turns in an excellent performance, and the film takes several dark turns towards the end that really elevate it past other similar 80s retro efforts.

Unsane - Really gritty and disturbing with non-stop psychological escalation. Having this shot on an iPhone increases the atmosphere greatly.

Upgrade - Not too much of a horror film but this was still a blast to watch.

Hereditary - It was great, but it wasn't groundbreaking and was surprisingly straightforward, except for that one shocking scene. You know the one.

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich - How can a Puppet Master film this deep into the franchise be this damn enjoyable?

A Quiet Place - I felt it was overrated too actually, I didn't think there was a very clear set of defined rules regarding sound levels in the film. The monsters kind of just worked however the scenes needed them too. Otherwise, really well-acted and I did end up liking the whole near "silent film" thing the film had going for it.

Bad Samaritan - More of a thriller I suppose but David Tennant turns in a great unhinged performance.

Demon House - Okay, I'm kind of a sucker for these paranormal/ghost hunting docs but this was a pretty compelling story.

The Strangers: Prey at Night - This one got a lot of hate and yeah it didn't quite live up to the original but it was still a chilling time. Very classic slasher feel to it.

The Cloverfield Paradox - Another one that I think got a bit unfairly hated on. The plot was kind of stupid but there was a lot of memorable scenes of body horror in this film that I liked.

Winchester - I love the real-life story but this movie was a snoozer. Typical ghost haunting BS I'm so tired of.

Insidious: The Last Key - I actually like the Insidious series but I can barely even remember this film at all.

Truth or Dare - Easily one of the worst horror films of the decade, but also one of the funniest.

The Open House - *insert FFX laughing scene here*

ooh ok

Annihilation - Alex Garland is easily one of the most promising upcoming directors of the decade holy shit

Hereditary - spooky and clever

The Endless - what Snake said but not quite as much

A Quiet Place - rare blockbuster horror that's actually pretty good and uses sound design to great purpose despite some logical flaws

Throughbreds - anya taylor joy is basically the best modern scream queen we could ask for

First Reformed - definitely not horror but I don't exactly know wtf to call it it's just really good

Upgrade - I mean if Snake's counting it sure; whatever plot but GODDAMN that fight camerawork

Unsane - really cool premise and camerawork but plot really fell apart for me in the back half

-huge gap-

Truth or Dare - super dumb in a hilarious way, basically a must-see

The Cloverfield Paradox - super dumb in a super dumb way; don't listen to snake this movie 100% deserves to get shit on as much as it does
