We game share on PS4. Usually we go halves on games, but recently two games we wanted released fairly close to each other.

I bought Monster Hunter: World for $60. Shadow of the Colossus Remake was coming out at $40, so I said rather than give me $30 for MH: W, just to buy SotC and give me $10. Simple, no?

He insists that not only is my math wrong, but if anything I owe him $10. Ill admit that math is not my strong suit, but am I crazy or is he possibly correct in this?

The way I see it:

$60 + $40 = $100

Half of $100 is $50

SotC is $40

$50 - $40 = $10 that he would owe me, no?

Im about ready to give in and just tell him to keep the $10.

Just do it the hard way. Tell him he owes you $30 for MH, then give him $20 for SotC.

Didnt even occur to me to do this. Ive been so wrapped up in convincing him of my math I didnt even consider other solutions.

Its never been an issue, but weve never bought two games so close together like this before. Usually one of us buys the game and the other pays half in cash.

Honestly dont think hes intentionally trying to gyp me out of $10. He legit believes hes correct.

I would with my brother, but we play different types of games. So, it probably wouldn't work well...

I like Red_Frog's idea. And that's what I would do. But also, have you asked him to do the math for you. Like to say it out loud. Once he starts saying it. And possibly writing it down, he may realize his math is wrong...

if you bought a $60 dollar game and he bought a $40 dollar game then thats a $20 difference. if he gave you $20 then it's like you each spent $60.

if he gave you $10 then you spent $60 and he spent $50, how is that even?

and if they're trying to balance it out then the guy who paid less needs to make up half the difference. 20 / 2 = 10. so friend owes OP $10.

Basically, what everyone is saying is that this would just basically swap TC's position with his friend. And TC would then owe his friend $10.

Think of it this way. TC paid $60. Friend paid $40. Total was $100. If Friend pays TC $10, the now TC has paid $60-$10, which equals $50. And Friend has paid $40+$10, which also equals $50. And $50+$50=$100.

I know it looks confusing typed out, but just write it out on your own. It should work...

I'm trying to understand what the friend's reasoning is.
If you just bought Monster Hunter: World for $60 you both would play it and the friend would chip in $30.
If you just bought SotC for $40 you both would play it and the friend would chip in $20.
If you bought $100 worth of games you both would play them and the friend would chip in $50.

Scenario 1) You both play both games, the friend chips in a $40 game + $10.
Scenario 2) Your friend doesn't play SotC. You only share the 1st game. The second game makes up the $30 the friend would have chipped plus an extra $10.

The only way the friend's reasoning works is if you wanted SotC for yourself and the friend would chip in nothing.

Doing favors and lending out money and stuff like that made me realize that most of my friends are dumb as hell and are terrible with math/money. I had to stop with those things because it's annoying worrying about if/when I'll get my money back.

Anyway, TC you are absolutely right and if both games were paid for and being played by both of you, then he should really make up the difference. $10 may not be much but your money is your money.

The only thing I can figure TC's very dumb friend did is that since the game he is buying is $40 and TC said "rather than give me $30," he subtracted $30 from $40. I don't know how that makes sense logically, but that's the only way I can see him coming out with those numbers.

That's possible. All it takes for even basic math is to forget one little step and in this case TC's friend mighta forgot to split that $40 in half between finding the difference between the $30 and $20.

This is what Im thinking.

As much as I appreciate everyone calling my friend an idiot, those saying we shouldnt game share over $10 should understand thats its not as big a deal as theyre making it out to be. Weve been friends for ages.

I can see where theres reason for being cautious. If we had a true falling out, wed both be out a few hundred dollars in games, depending on who bought what and who has whatever games still stored in their hard drive. I dont anticipate an argument of that magnitude, certainly not over $10. Something could happen, but its doubtful.
