there has to be some basic level of combat that you can always partake in obviously

seems highly genre dependent because of that, like how are you going to have a run and gun without infinite ammo for the basic weapon?

Then youll over use whatever has the most plentiful ammo. Like assault rifle ammo if the basic enemies drop it.

I definitely do what TC is talking about. If there's an infinite ammo gun, that's what I'm using 90% of the time.

Another thing I've noticed is that if a game lets me accumulate an unlimited amount of money, I won't spend any of it. Collecting as much money as possible becomes a meta game. Whereas if they have a cap on how much money you can carry, I'll spend it every chance I get because it feels wasteful to leave a bunch of money laying around that I can't pick up.

pistol is highly accurate imo when i played wolfenstein (though this was useful for taking out some parts with stealth).

it's very insane with the new order on highest difficulty (had to take down a massive corridor practically in stealth fashion) with enemy's that could reduce health to zero in a few seconds.

I've never looked at it that way. Most of the time the starter weapon becomes last resort anyway after you start acquiring other weapons. Unless the game has some sort of upgrade mechanic.

Wrong

The shoot guns for the fatties and Biggie's. Shocker for the Minnie's. Blade shooters for more resilent mobs, and grenades for crowd control. The standard rifle will get you killed on any difficultly above average. The real issue is that people play on easy difficulties and never feel the need to optimize their strategy. Try using a pistol in doom and see how that goes.

If average damage is enough, that means the game is too easy. I certainly don't bomb everything to death in Zelda but I do bomb a lot to conserve weapons. It's somewhat boring at times.
