I like them to be funny. I deal with the camera in Gex games because I love the humor and the level design. I can't think of any other collect-a-thon I like, though.

Did you play Yooka Laylee? Is it as good as Banjo?

haven't played it yet but I want to despite the mediocre reviews (and them removing jontron). I feel like it's exactly like the Banjo games and reviewers didn't like that for whatever reason

Waiting for it to be in a humble bundle or something >_>

Never played Banjo Kazooie but SM64 was great.

A Hat in Time is pretty cool, too.

Collectathon games feel like house cleaning.

At least actually cleaning yields a tangible benefit.

It really is a tragedy what Rare did with Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts

There should be an ESPN 30 for 30 on that

When did the internet turn on DK64 and start hating it? I loved that game as a kid and growing up it seemed like it was pretty universally liked even on the early interwebs. Lately though all you see if people bitching about the collecting aspect. Is it a generational thing/all the kids born in like 1999 are grown up and are game journalists now?

My issue is with those games is usually that the levels get a lot less fun as the game goes on

The first 3-4 levels on Banjo are fucking amazing and endlessly replayable. The later levels are a huge pain in the ass

Banjo Kazooie was great. Banjo Tooie revealed the mysteries in BK, but it didn't stand up as well to the original.

I haven't played a lot of collectathons, but Spyro 1-3, Jak & Daxter and A Hat in Time are amazing. Don't care for SM64 or Sunshine, though.

Banjo Kazooie is one of my favorite games of all time and I can't stand Tooie. I've tried it over and over again but I just can't do it. The first world is more of a giant mess than anything in Kazooie, I can't handle the level design in that game.

Yooka Laylee is decent. I was insanely excited for it and I do like it, but it VERY obviously feels like an indie game made without a big budget/producer like Nintendo looking over it to make sure it's high quality.

To be honest, it does capture the feel of the series perfectly, but as a whole it really just feels like a Banjo Kazooie game that's being held together with duct tape and rubber bands.

If you're a huge fan of original Rareware, you'll enjoy it, but probably not love it. For everyone else, I can def see why it got such average reviews.

I love the idea of collectathons, enjoyed DK64 enough (though I never beat it), and A Hat in Time was fantastic, but honestly Banjo-Kazooie felt kinda... meh to me. Haven't played Tooie though.

I feel like I'm one of the few people that liked N&B. Like, it's not a good Banjo-Kazooie game... but it's a pretty good game on its own.

Yooka-Laylee was also very meh. Moreso than B-K. I was seriously disappointed by Y-L.

Banjo-Kazooie is good but a lot of games in that genre have not aged well. It's pretty difficult to make a compelling collectathon. Spyro is another good one.

Speaking of house cleaning, Chibi-Robo was really enjoyable once and then had ZERO replay value.
