You don't get to decide pronunciations, just spellings.

incorrect. for example: if you speak english you can pronounce "rio grande" as "rio grand".

Very strange I got modded for apparently abusing the mention system with my previous post.

And you'd never know it because they didn't take down the post. Silly new system is silly.

I don't get the hard g appeal to "jraphics" when they don't seem to care about pronouncing jpeg as "jay-peg" instead of "jay-feg".

Similarly, the closest word in the English language to gif isn't "giraffe" as some are claiming, but rather "gin". Some might pull the word "gift" as a counter argument, but the addition of an extra consonant at the end changes the pronunciation. Just as if there was a word called "gint", which I know full well you just pronounced in your head with a hard g.

I'm going to continue saying jif.

Edit: TIL I have "hard" and "soft" g mixed up. Fixed.

I always pronounce it like 'gift' minus the T.
Isn't that how you're supposed to pronounce it?

If it was spelled Jpheg, I would pronounce it Jay-feg. The only reason I don't is because P on it's own doesn't make that sound. But a g on it's own could go either way. I pronounce it gif, btw...

there is no "g" sound in either of those words. (i would pronounce "mach" like "mock" and loch like "lock")

Obviously I'm talking about the actual pronunciations, not the pronunciations in modern American English that have that K-shift.

that's how you pronouce loch.... it's not a "modern american english" way either.

google "loch" the dictionary sound pronunciation sounds like "lock"

Er no, the way to pronounce loch isn't lock. I don't know how to describe it other than ch in loch is more like a throat clearing sound. Google it and you'll hear it.

The IPA for loch is /lk/, which is the same as lock. You're thinking of Gogh.
