Similarly, the closest word in the English language to gif isn't "giraffe" as some are claiming, but rather "gin". Some might pull the word "gift" as a counter argument, but the addition of an extra consonant at the end changes the pronunciation. Just as if there was a word called "gint", which I know full well you just pronounced in your head with a hard g. I'm going to continue saying jif. Edit: TIL I have "hard" and "soft" g mixed up.
