Board 8 > Is there any fanbase that ruins your enjoyment of a particular show/game/book?

Genuinely curious, I usually dont pay attention to that sort of stuff anyway but I often hear a lot about how annoying some fanbases are.

Like either the product is strong enough that I dont really care (Rick and Morty, Pokemon, Game of Thrones come to mind here) or its not something I really enjoy anyway (Naruto, for example)

No, but I know what you mean. I largely tune out the Final Fantasy, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Star Trek, and even BioWare fanbases these days whereas I used to interact with 'em a ton.

Stuff like this used to bother me a lot but then I had an epiphany that other people's reactions to something I enjoyed shouldn't have any bearing on my enjoyment of it. I'll definitely avoid interaction with fan bases that become overly toxic, obnoxious or whatever else though. Rick and Morty is a pretty good recent example.

Rick and Morty kind of made me go from being excited for Season 3 and ready to binge it when it's done to not really wanting to watch it at all now. And I loved the first two seasons and watched them multiple times.

Pretty much every 'fanbase' I've ever seen consists entirely of people ranting about how much they despise almost every release in the franchise they claim to be fans of. I assume that they must like one game/film/episode, but none of them ever mention the good bit, just how much the current writers deserve to be murdered for ruining everything forever.

Not a single Nintendo game has lived up to the hype. That's not to say I don't like them but when every new installation of Zelda is the greatest game that has ever been released it becomes tedious and I just avoid them. Same for Ace Attorney, Metroid, Mario and Pokemon hasn't been good since like Emerald.

No, it's stupid to care about what other fans think about what you like. Understandable though, and it's much better than liking something just because of the fanbase (bronies etc).

That's what I used to think until it happened to me.

I used to be huge into Super Smash Bros: played all the games, considered it the multiplayer series, went to tournaments, etc. But the community got so bad that I literally could not tolerate going to tournaments anymore (my constant frustration at the people overpowered whatever amount of fun I had while playing) and eventually I stopped associating with them online as well. Now I can't even enjoy playing single player alone at home because they ruined that for me too.

I think the idea is it becomes hard to disassociate fans from the product if it becomes too bad

I always thought the Szechuan sauce thing was supposed to be a goofy gag thing Dan Harmon chose randomly, then again Ive watched so much Community that I dont think there was any silly meaning to it I the first place
