Like, they made so many fucking sleeper hits outside of GTA. Shit like Manhunt, The Warriors, Red Dead Revolver, Midnight Club

Now you come to this gen, and they legit have ONLY focused on GTA Online. There's a good chance there going to go this entire generation and only release a single new game with Red Dead Redemption 2.

Good point. I'm sure that they're just focused on maximizing the dollars they can get from GTA for now. Hard to argue with that

I replayed The Warriors recently and like I honestly forgot how fucking good some of their lesser known shit really was as far as building atmosphere went.

They probably make more money selling shark cards than they ever did releasing other games.

A lot of their stuff back then was pretty mediocre though. Manhunt and State of Emergency weren't really that good. I always liked Burnout more than Midnight Club too.

There was this weird jankiness to most of their games back then. People tolerated it in GTA because of the scope of those games but their other games often suffered.

Bully and The Warriors were fun though. But tbh the only thing I actually miss is Max Payne.

There was a weird jankiness to most games back then.

I feel like people have really forgotten the PS2 era. Most games were not as polished as MGS2.

Also GTA San Andreas is far less janky than GTA IV and GTA V.

Manhunt was only memorable because it had violent stealth kills and some neat enemy designs. As an actual stealth game it wasn't good.

It came out a year after Splinter Cell. Two years after MGS2. It's like a generation behind both of these games.

Manhunt wasn't trying to be a fucking military stealth game, though. It's trying to be closer to a horror experience.

And yeah, it's atmosphere is a huge reason why it's so great.

All that matters to rockstar is selling shark cards, there is little to no effort required to make a lot of profit off them.

I remember the PS2 gen. There were a lot of janky games back then yes. And Rockstar was one of those developers who would release them. GTA was their standout franchise and the rest of their stuff was pretty mid-tier at best. Max Payne was the other exception but that was from Remedy.

It's not about being a military game. It was an ugly ass game with bad controls.

That's the trend for most companies nowadays. New titles come out much slower and instead they focus on DLC and patches for the stuff that is out with new content coming more sparingly and original content even more so.

Depends on the company and gametype, I'm not aware of microtransactions in Rockstar and definitely not lootboxes. Can't really geta way with those as much when it's single player so they shift to DLCs. Some are pathetic, like the Witch's Hunt in Dragon Age: Origins, but some are good.

I miss expansion packs :|

pretty sure LA Noire and Max Payne 3 were pretty big flops for them.

AAA gaming is a risky business, can't blame them for focusing on the cash cows.

Manhunt was only notable to me for how it pushed boundaries for game violence at the time. I didn't find it particularly fun to play.
