HUD changing and noise. Not sure which of most closely fits it. iirc Skyrim was one of the ones to do something like that.

I like the character art to indicate it. Like FF games have the character kneeling. Showing the character bleeding, injured or breathing hard or something is better. Stuff that constantly flashes, slows you down or makes sounds is just annoying.

Alive, then dead (Ghost Recon)

sounds about right

or dying as soon as you get behind cover, despite taking a whole lot of shots at 0 health on the way to cover

if it suits the game, pause it, with the particular character stating "omg, I'm dying".

otherwise turning the screen red and muffling the sounds seems like one of the best ways, being both atmospheric and informative

Voted for flashing health meter

I prefer very minimal indication, if at all. Such as a bloody-face avatar (Quake) or a red health meter/health percent.

Blood splats or some color change that doesn't interfere with the music or audio.

Obnoxious is actually the perfect term to describe it. But not for the intended reason. In the etymological sense of visible.

I question how easy games are where people feel some ui change isn't necessary to note when the player is almost dead. In challenging content you can't afford to be watching your health bar the entire time.

I'd probably say "single alarm" since it only sounds when you get hit.

Nothing makes me shit my pants more than the "severely low health" sound it makes.

It's a little more than that, though. There's the increasingly frantic single alarms, there's the smoke coming out of the ship, there's the rumble, there's the impairment to flying if you've lost a wing... Taking heavy damage in that game was an immersive, visceral experience, which was amazing.

Really is a little bit of everything tbh

Probably a vote for "other"

All of these. I can tell when I'm near death if you just give me a health bar and let me monitor it myself. Beeping, flashing, and other such distracting shit is not needed at all.
