Turnbased.

If we're talking a party system, turn-based. Solo, I like WRPG-styled combat like in Bethesda games. I agree with this. Parties need either excellent AI with lots of player control (Dragon Age: Origins had this) or they need to be turn-based with full player control (which actually DA:O also had as an option). For solo games, turn-based slows things down and doesn't really add anything. ... Copied to Clipboard!

what's really the important factor is how tactical the combat is and how good it is, turn based or not. it can be good or bad either way.
I'll lean towards real-time though, I think, mainly because turn-based combat tends to create a disconnect between exploration and combat. in a real-time game, you can loot a chest while being waled on by a zombie, for example. in a turn-based game, this is only possible if the combat occurs in the same space as the exploration, consuming AP or something for looting a chest. note that I'm thinking of "pausable real-time", too. to put it simply: pausable-real-time > turn-based > unpausable real-time --- The truth basks in scrutiny. http://i.imgur.com/GMouTGs.jpg http://projecteuler.net/profile/Sahuagin.png ... Real-Time, though with decent teammate AI, proper hitboxes, and movement that isn't slow & clunky... or "realistic" as some people like to call it.

Action-based because usually it feels like I'm more in control of my actions and that combat usually feels more rewarding. Being able to actually dodge or block an attack feels far more rewarding to me than having a chance to dodge/block it.
Tails 64 posted... I, personally, lean strongly toward turn-based. It tends to offer more strategy and depth. Too often, in games like Tales of Symphonia, I felt as if I just spammed the generic attack button like crazy while throwing in a special attack every so often, not really doing much thinking. I feel like this can also apply to turn-based combat as well. Spam attack and strongest spells. Maybe I've just been playing too many bad turn-based RPGs recently. --- "You rat! Turn base, easily. Whether it's menu based by jrpg, strategy like old fallout, or pause issue command like baldur's gate, they are all better than real time action rpg. I don't think there's a rpg I like that wouldn't benefit from switching to one of those combat systems.

I prefer turn-based usually. I'm more of a thinker than a twitch gamer. Same. I prefer thinking over what to do and planning, plus RPG and Turn-Based Strategy (which is much less common than RTS) are basically the only genres you get to do that. If I want real time combat, I have plenty of other games to choose from. Not strongly in favor though, because a rare few games like Xenoblade have done real time combat so well, and that was fun, too. But I prefer turn-based. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It really depends, I love turn-based gameplay in series like SMT, but I hate the Active battle system some FFs use and I abhor Pokemon's tediously slow gameplay.
I sort of flip flop between liking Turn-based and real time more too, both have their merits and can be either really great or terribly obnoxious depending on different things. --- equo ne credite! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Real-time. Turn-based usually requires too much thinking. I got this game called Will-Nilly Knight that looks great and sounds pretty good from some of the reviews but I haven't got more than 10 minutes into it simply because the combat is pause-n-play.

ATB is best. Disagree, I find it's the worst of both worlds. Can't take the time to think tactically like in true turn-based combat, but still follows its conventions and denies you the freedom of real time combat. Of course there's examples of good games that had enjoyable combat despite being ATB-like (Baten Kaitos Origins and Chrono Trigger would be my top picks there), but I usually play an ATB game and wish it wasn't that way. ...
