The First Order looks stronger than ever, the Resistance is almost entirely destroyed, and the entirety of the second movie was essentially about building up the next generation to fight the First Order, with all of the focus on kids at least 10 yeard too young.

Even if Kylo Ren turns light in the next movie, there is no way I can see to this plausibly ending the First Order.

Are we going to be in this conflict for the long haul?

Considering almost the first half of RotJ was them just rescuing Han, they had no problem destroying the Death Star II, saving Vader and defeating the emperor in an hour. I'm sure they'll figure it out with IX

There was a throwaway line about allies "in the outer rim" when they were lamenting the fact that nobody responded to their distress call. Leia will vanish at the start of the movie to do a "diplomatic mission" so they can write Carrie Fisher off, and at the end when things are hopeless a massive army of allies will appear to save the day ala Lord of the Rings, showing that hope indeed survived.

Yeah but the ending involved a secret assassination mission against the Emperor that no one was expecting.

And as we can see, the Empire really wasn't defeated. They came back in the form of the First Order, as strong as ever. The death of the Emperor was a minor set back.

It won't be believable this time if the First Order is destroyed by hack writing.

They've lost their death star knock off, Snoke's capital ship, Snoke himself, and are being led by an inexperienced, temperamental tool.

And if they had spare ships, the whole chase thing would have ended as soon as their back up hyperspace jumped in front of the Resistance and blew them up.

The First Order and Kylo are the least threatening antagonists in SW history.

But the Resistance is also the least competent, well, resistance we've ever seen by far.

And also down to enough people to fit onto a single smuggling ship with no additional resources or allies.

The First Order hasn't taken control of the Galaxy yet. Luke let off a spark of hope at the end of TLJ that will impact way more people than just the slave kids.

The opening text scrawl highly suggested that the First Order has or will soon take over large parts of the galaxy. In theory they should only be getting more powerful, not less.

"The FIRST ORDER reigns. Having decimated the peaceful Republic, Supreme Leader Snoke now deploys his merciless legions to seize military control of the galaxy.

"Only General Leia Organas band of RESISTANCE fighters stand against the rising tyranny, certain that Jedi Master Luke Skywalker will return and restore a spark of hope to the fight.

"But the Resistance has been exposed. As the First Order speeds toward the rebel base, the brave heroes mount a desperate escape....

It seems as if the Republic is dead, the only resistance was the Resistance, which has dwindled to a single ship's worth of people, and Snoke has sent out his stormtroopers to take over a seemingly defenseless galaxy.

The Empire seems to be back in full force.

Yeah I know. Rey mentions to Luke that they'll take over the galaxy in a few weeks. So they haven't yet.

The spark of hope will cause more rebellions. Seems like the obvious route to take.

And this is why Luke "I am the force god bitches" Skywalker shouldn't have been killed off.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if puppet Yoda, angsty Anakin, and Super Luke combine as one massive force ghost and just eat everything that can't be taken care of by whatever is left of the resistance

I'm not sure I even care anymore
