My favorite action movie of all time and probably in my top 5 movies period. It's pretty difficult to imagine a movie doing what it did more perfectly.

No, I love action movies like this, I just don't watch movies on my own very often. Sitting down to watch a thing for two hours feels like such a big commitment. I'm very slowly working through my backlog.

Right??? I had the same reaction when I watched it for the first time about 5 years ago

I don't think I've ever seen a movie pull off its concept so flawlessly before, there's a reason it's like the gold standard of action movies

Also, what I love about the movie is that all the little details add up and contribute in some way to the story (like the "fists with your toes" conversation). Not to mention you actually see John and the tower get increasingly hurt/destroyed as the movie unfolds. And it's all just paced so well.

I didn't watch it for a long time too but it's definitely instant classic status of action movies.

I think the rest of the series besides 5 is overall worth the watches too, even if they're clearly not genuinely great movies.

I wasn't really that into Die Hard 4 personally, but I do really like Die Hard 2, I think it's way better than its reputation. It's not on the same level as Die Hard, but it's a fun action film in its own right.

I watched it again today for the first time in years, and I can confirm its a fuckin great movie.

Die Hard 4 is a good action movie, but not much of a Die Hard movie. Feels more like something like San Andreas with The Rock than Die Hard.

2 is fun, 3 is excellent, 5 is horribad.

What about some other post-Die Hard movies? Under Siege and Speed are amazing.

Die Hard has an interesting focus on language and the breakdown of communication, and Nakatomi Plaza is a textbook example of environment as a character. McTiernan was one of the best 'vulgar' auteurs for a while

I mean, in Die Hard the line was a reference to a thing that Hans had said to him earlier, so it made sense in context.

It had no connection to the bad guys in this movie, so it seems like a weird thing to say unless he's aware that there's an audience of people waiting to hear him say it. He should have come up with a new personalized quip for those guys.

I always thought it would have made more sense if he had said 'Happy trails, Esperanza' because at least that was the last thing he said to Hans before killing him, even if the Roy Rogers reference is lost.
