But I actually just thought "William Sha? Who is William Sha?" I pronounced it like Shaw. My mind didn't even try to fill in the blank.

When you see "William Sha", you mentally pronounce "Sha" as "Sh" or "Sh", not "She". You're already filling it in with a vowel that sounds much more like that in Shatner than in Shakespeare, so you'll associate the blanks with him more readily

Granted, I had to Google it to remember exactly what is what, but yeah, I recognize when it makes things easier. I briefly debated using it on a college essay to describe how to pronounce "apoapsis" before deciding it was weird and pretentious.

do you guys not realize that by saying "sha doesn't sound like either" you're saying that "sha" on its own has a distinct sound, whether you agree with sha being as shatner or not

the point is that sound representation biases the choice so that you're not actually doing a "shakespeare vs shatner"

Or you could just treat it as a word puzzle rather than a sound puzzle. Especially since not everyone subvocalizes when they read.

The a in "sha" is certainly a closer phoneme to the a in Shatner than to the one in Shakespeare, and perhaps more importantly we as English-speakers think of it as different type of "short a" even though it's not one. I think "William Sh" would have been more fair.

That said I voted Shakespeare and am kinda floored I'm in such a small minority. Shatner's just not nearly as relevant to me.

I was surprised too despite voting Shatner. I do theatre and I just finished my sixth Shakespeare production in October, plus I never watched Star Trek...but Shatner was a easy answer for me.

I had the same thought. I voted Shatner because of the sound. If it had been "Sh" I might've thought Shakespeare.

Thank goodness I already have his (Shatner's) autograph

Yeah, Shatner means nothing to me, but even though "Sha" is a different sound, it's closer to Shatner than Shakespeare, so my mind just autocorrected to Shatner since I do at least know who he is.

It's not about treating it as a "sound puzzle", it's just sound bias from the given reading. There's no "sub-vocalizing" because what you're reading is the full given text, "William Sha"

input wheel of fortune video of guy that can't think of the answer Magic *Wand* in time because the given letters a-n-d read off as the word/sound "and" in his mind.
