IIRC there is no language or sexuality that would be above a PG-13. Pretty sure the rating is just for violence, but even then, it's not like there are a lot of extreme scenes or any gore. I used to watch it on TV way too many times and the only violence I can remember being edited was some reduced blood splatters in the lobby scene.

Tamest by MPAA standards, at least. I'm sure there are movies where it's just a few f-bombs or some nipples shown for too long, but Americans have weird standards. We're apparently very prude about swearing and sex, but violence isn't a big deal

I see the opposite problem, movies using their "one fuck limit" and "20 kill limit" to keep their movie PG-13... most publishers try to avoid that R.

So basically, anything R from before the 90s is pretty tame on average due to simpler sensibilities... they wouldn't have Human Centipede'd back then. Like, take The Terminator for example... that's one swear from being a kids movie

Oh, there's a kill limit? That might explain why The Matrix was R. Or maybe the blood in the lobby scene, but TV editing is weird and they remove stuff from PG-13 movies too.

Before the 90's, they didn't have stuff like Human Centipede, but they had slasher films with a lot of nudity and over-the-top gore. The Terminator is also a bad example. It has a sex scene, for one. It's also more of a suspense action movie than a blow-em-up action movie. Stuff like Commando and Rambo is ridiculously violent

It might not actually be "20", that's just an estimate. Take that movie "Mechanic: Resurrection" which doesn't make any sense or have any internal logic... It's technically rated R, but only because it went over the kill limit by 1. Because the rest of the movie is PG-13 EASILY

Both have one scene with a few swear words, which is the only reason they're rated R

As I'm sure most people know, Australian classification laws are... strict and inconsistent (more so for games than movies).

The Matrix in Australia is only M (suggested 15+) according to the classification site (was going to say it can't be R, since it was shown at my school for studying purposes). I don't watch movies so don't know any 'tame' (or any) R movies, but R in Australia is 'enforced' 18+.

i've always hated that. deadpool, logan and even the matrix shows movies can be huge hits even with a R rating.

^ Sort of. audience is a lot bigger with a pg-13 movie than it is with a rated r movie.

It's way Pitch Perect 2 destroyed Max Max Road Fury in opening weekend. And why Alvin and the Chipmunk makes so much money (3 movies gross over $500 million in the theater) (even though nobody i know went to go see them).

you can say all you want about R movies don't make the money PG-13 moives. if scream was R it wouldn't have made as much money as it did.

I don't really know, but I heard Psycho is pretty tame by today's standards for an R movie. Never seen it though so I can't say personally.

I'm sure there's tamer. If nothing else, Billy Elliot -- a movie about a miner's son who wants to be a dancer -- had an R. At any rate. does it really matter much? Some films will market themselves as R rather than PG13 to attract a different crowd, since angsty young people are often prejudiced against PG13 films.

Pretty sure neither of those are things

Companies sometimes want an R rather than a PG13. For instance, there's a stigma around PG13 horror, partly thanks to stuff like Twilight.

It might not actually be 20 because there's almost certainly no limit. How many died in Titanic? That was PG13. The Wolverine? Also PG13. Happy Death Day had the main character repeatedly get murdered and, guess what? PG13. Plus you have hundreds of monster movies with widespread casualties rated PG or PG13. Hell, even Cloverfield was PG13 and that had a LOT more than just 20 deaths.

"one fuck limit"

I hear about this a lot, but I know for a fact "Finding Forrester" gave 2 fucks and it has a PG-13 rating. Which was the one movie that made me question the legitimacy of that limit.

More likely: WT6Hk

Anyway, I do find a lot of movies and games from earlier times that I feel got a pass. Ocarina of Time literally had blood and borderline nudity and still got an E rating.

Ratings change over time. "G" used to be pretty standard, until it became stigmatized as cartoons and kids stuff.
