I felt like I heard the instrumentals before but the chorus was pretty catchy and I enjoyed the lyrics as well.

I really didn't like the verse vocals but the chorus is fantastic, Patton's trademark wild vocal style works better there. A little unremarkable on the instrumental side of things though.

Love the differing vocals and the way they switch things up near the end of the song.

I think in general I like the drummer ones you post, I think the very first week of this you posted a drummer one I liked, or it might have been week 2.

good call. the first song mycro posted was innovation by anthony burns, which was also a jazz fusion tune by a drummer. i prefer upside in downside up because this one doesn't have a bad mix that has the drums way too loud.

somebody else can have my spot.

i dont have the time or energy to give people enough and i feel like i'm not respecting their time given how much some people devote to writeups and engagement. at the same time, i'm dissatisfied with the level of discussion around individual tracks. i myself am doing nothing to help this, so i'll bounce. i'm glad i took part because i found some interesting stuff and i'm sure i will follow future topics, im just not putting enough into it and feel bad for that.

this week i liked jesus glue (one of my favorite songs), superfast jellyfish (a very good song from a mediocre album) colourless colour (love me some la roux) the village (just great vocals), river of brakelights and we're not alone

i wasn't feeling give up the sun, the vocals were pretty awful. i didn't mind mycro's song this week -- it's not something i love but closer to something id enjoy. "suck" was missing something and i'm really not sure what. i guess i don't care for the vocals that much. tee time didn't do much for me.

i feel like best laid plans was almost a good song but i didnt care for any of the bits where the wasn't singing.

the village > superfast jellyfish > jesus glue > colourless colour > we're not alone > rivero f brakelights > upside in downside up > best laid plans > suck > tee time > give up the sun

(1ST) Vulfpeck - Tee Time
Vulfpeck's really damn cool. I should probably listen to them more - they're from the same town as my old piano rock band (Ann Arbor, MI). This amalgamation of like, dance and mechanical showtune is too cool for school. I can see why a keyboardist would have a hard-on for this lul. It's like something you would hear during the frantic bonus stage of a platformer (BREAK THE TARGETS). Funk jam bliss.

(2nd) La Roux - Colourless Colour
Really just a memorable, classic-sounding pop chorus - reminiscent of Ellie Goulding's "Lights", or 3OH!3's "Don't Trust Me". Would be really fun to sing. Not a lot of note instrumentally but when the main vocal melody's that strong it doesn't matter.

(3rd) Simon Phillips - Upside in Downside Up
One of those great instrumental tracks you'd only hear through Mycro - mixed meter of course. Really great keyboard work, especially in the bridge like halfway through. When the guitar comes back in at around 4:17 - and that solo to follow - it's just glorious. I do feel it could end shortly after that - where those hits come in and it washes out at around 5:10. I feel we've heard the main pattern enough times, and the busy drum fills feel tacked on. The very end phrase is cool though.

Julian Casablancas - River of Brakelights
I like the sinister opening, and the bit around 50 seconds in (and again at 2:50). I initially didn't like the whole getting the hang of it, timing is everything, getting is everything, timing the hang of it on and on and on, but him mixing the words up is almost like tongue-in-cheek. The irreverence of it is funny. 2:15 is neat.

Art by the Numbers - Best Laid Plans
The transition from jazz into emo rock is....interesting. Really not bad except for the vocals. Got a fun, upbeat groove, with complementary guitar and piano parts. Sounds like a bit of Wind Waker prologue at 2:33. Shuffle outro with the electric piano is cool. Instrumentally it's very good.

Glassjaw - Jesus Glue
I like the drum beat, and the recurring part with higher, sustained vocals + that cyclical guitar part. The guitar at the bridge has like a cool surfer/Miserlou sound. Ugh the vocal tantrums though....lol wtf. I.....would not have done that. At least don't make it so whiny-sounding.

Wrabel - The Village
I get why people are praising the vocals here, but it's a little too naked imo.

Reba McEntire - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
Country at best doesn't do much for me, but the chorus here is good enough that I can respect it's a pretty good song. Guitar line is simple but good there, as is the drum fill leading into the final rendition of the chorus near the end. I'm really not into the whole classic "gather round y'all let me tell ya a story" medium so I'm not really interested in the verses. I want more musicality or singing that would elicit emotion.

Peeping Tom - We're Not Alone
Starts a bit like Superfast Jellyfish in that a nice phat beat drops in to open things up. Unfortunately the rest of it's not really my style.

Priests - Suck
Immediately reminded me of DEVO's "Dove: The Band of Love" parody band - a send up of bad 80's pop/guitar bands. The vocals have that distinct female new wave sound - Funkytown especially comes to mind. They're certainly much better than in the Gun Club song, but the song as a whole really doesn't go anywhere. It repeats that arpeggiation to the point of being cheesy.

The Gun Club - Give Up the Sun
This guy sounds kind of like David Byrne.....but crosses that fine line of unstable/interesting into just grating and bad. They remind me of awful local bands I've had to sit through. Instrumentally they sound like they're going through the motions and the vocals are just like the worst possible form of that 80's new wave style.

Alright so I've been mulling it over a bit and here's a proposal:

What do you guys think of making this Song of the Bi-Week? Obviously not the title but basically just making this 2 week thing what it is going forward, since we've been having multiple people needing over a week almost ever week we do this now. That's not a knock on anyone; we all have lives and are doing stuff, and the last thing I want this to be is a hassle of any kind. Making it permanently 2 weeks gives everyone, I believe, enough time to go through the songs at their leisure. Of course this means less nominations and what not, and some might not want it to be this long, so I don't want to enact this without any input. So feel free to discuss if you think this is something we should do going forward, and if we DO do this that it seriously means we won't have a situation of waiting on getting enough votes after deadlines.

I'm just the worst. Half-ass writeups this time I'm tired

The Gun Club - Give Up the Sun
Feels like a Doors jam that overstays its welcome (I IV V ad nauseum) I think the singer whiffs some notes but the imperfections kinda give it character

Glassjaw - Jesus Glue
Someone really tried to sell me on these guys about twelve years ago and I never got around to checking them out. Kinda wish I had because I dig the sound of this, and it's something I would have been more into at that age although I still like it a lot even now. Thrashy melodic grindcore with some exciting twists and turns

Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish
Colorful and quirky like a mid-2000's Zooey Deschanel movie...almost too goofy for its own good. Fun but insubstantial like a (insert previous simile)

Simon Phillips - Upside in Downside Up
Wow that's awesome, holy shit. I loved the middle part with the rhodes, that 70's fusion sound is golden. Sick geetar solo was just a cherry on top

La Roux - Colorless Color
Ah yes I remember her from the iconsience series. Sleek, well-produced (synth)pop that lacks an edge but carries an energy

Priests - Suck
I enjoyed the lackadaiscal progression, somehow didn't even notice the sax first time through. Good background jams for my current Dark Souls adventure

Reba McEntire - The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia
It's not until you type it out that "McEntire" sounds like a completely made-up name. Wait, those keyboards at the beginning...it's the John Cena song hell yeah! Reba must have a pretty dark sense of humor because the happiest sounding part of the tune involves a corrupt judicial system hanging innocent men...dramatic irony is an effective storytelling device that's for sure.

Wrabel - The Village
Great dynamics on this song, it really underpromises and overdelivers. Dude has a powerful voice and oh shit a touching message to boot? What a pleasant surprise. Reminds me of that 'too late to 'pologize' tune by who the fuck ever

Peeping Tom - We're Not Alone
Unique vibe here, metallic dub almost. I was going to say it reminds me of Fantomas but then a wild Mike Patton appeared and I started hearing all the Keyser Soze clues around me that makes it so obvious in hindsight. I swear this dude has so many side projects he could fill an entire Coachella lineup. He needs his own genre tag. Oh yeah uh...I liked it!

Julian Casablancas - River of Brakelights
Ooh interesting, just distorted and bizarre enough to keep it unpredictable without sacrificing accessibility. Not into the ending (I wanted it to keep getting darker and heavier!) but there's a lot else to feast on here and the aesthetic has high potential in my estimation.

Art By Numbers - Best Laid Plans
How does every other dude have this voice nowadays but before like 2000 I never heard anyone sing this way? Mysteries of the universe. I prefer the jazz idioms to the drama-metal stuff so the bookends of this song are where I'm at.

Should we make this into a competition with whoever gets the lowest of the week gets eliminated week by week lmao

I think making it 2 weeks should really be more than enough time to listen to 12 songs, I know I listen to music a lot more than some other people so my viewing might be skewed. Let's just try it in this format for a bit and see what happens. As for the digi/lasa dropping in/out thing, I'll let you guys decide on that but digi if you want to try out the 2 week thing and see how it goes too that would be cool
