I mostly hide it IRL. My family would probably kill me if they out about it. For reasons like that I haven't really done much of a transition and am completely closeted about it except online.

So I wouldn't necessarily pin me as the authority for whether it's difficult or not, because it's hard for people to hassle you about something they don't know about. On top of that I'm at what at least seems a fairly liberal university compared to the rest of the area, so I probably have it easier than most and could honestly probably be more open about it if I didn't really fear it coming back to my family.

That said, throughout the time I've been here I've seen quite a few people get bugged for like problems - being gay namely, since we had at least one guy in my high school class that was openly gay and he got a fair bit of flak for it from students. Probably teachers too on some level since I know a few would gladly have jumped at that chance but they probably were more subtle with it.

So in terms of a social contextualization, yeah, I imagine it would probably be a lot harder here than somewhere liberal to be openly trans.

In terms of resources (like counselors or the means to get HRT, SRS, that kinda stuff), I honestly don't know. Any of that is just years away because I need to get away from my crazy family before I can even begin to consider a physiological transition ... so why look into it now? Probably not the most proactive approach but odds are I'll leave here anyways and move somewhere else. Or at least into the city where my university is (it's an hour from my family so not ideal but not bad): my eyes are screwed up so people always end up driving me, and the family lives in the middle of nowhere so moving is a necessity, and into the city in particular (easier public transportation).

That's the first goal anyhow - move away from my family and become self-sufficient.

So to answer your question more directly: it's difficult, certainly. It's the Bible belt: you're more likely in general to find, for lack of a better word, radical conservatives/Christians down here that'll force their beliefs down your throat and it be reinforced by others. But at the same time being pretty closeted about it IRL until at minimum I get into a better situation, I don't have to put up with a lot even though that means having to put the transition years down the road. Maybe that'll change when I'm not closeted about it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
