If you had told 15 year old me that in a dozen years you'd hate hip hop, I would have thought you were crazy

i grew up on hip hop. i was a typical Filipino kid growing up in the middle of inner city Los Angeles. first album I ever bought with my own money were Mos Def's Black on Both Sides and Talib Kweli's Train of Thought. From then on I listened to a lot of classic hip hop, 90s hardcore, 2000s underground and experimental rap. i wasn't a typical commercial rap fan who thought Eminem was the bees knees. i was a well-known regular on several hip hop forums (including the one on gfaqs). got into a lot of arguments with the "rap is crap" people.

but now? needless to say, i actively dislike pretty much any hip hop from the 2010s or so. but even the stuff I used to like, i never have the desire to listen to it. if I hear it playing somewhere, i'll somewhat enjoy it, mostly for the nostalgia, but i won't listen to it on my own.

what's weird is that there are plenty of people who were never never as big of a rap fan as I was yet still listen to plenty of rap today, while I've made a complete 180

Modern hip hop sounds so amateur. Like something youd hear some random
guy spouting off at a park.

Check out the alternative hip hop artists. They broke up recently, but the Odd Future Collective (and it's many member's solo acts) have a pretty unique (and diverse) discography. They're most known for Frank Ocean and Tyler, the Creator, but those two aren't even my favorite. This does have my favorite album by Tyler though.

Brockhampton just release two full length albums this year that are pretty strong. It's kind of amazing that they had all this ready to go in just one year.

Jay-Z deserves a revisit with 4:44. I've never much cared for Jay-Z until this album, but I'm listening now. Apparently he's responsible for this tragic Eminem x Beyonce single, and he cheated on B, so you know he ain't perfect.

This year has also seen new stuff from A Tribe Called Quest, which caught everyone by surprise, and P.O.S released their first album in four years.

Kendrick Lamar's DAMN isn't To Pimp a Butterfly, but that's such a high bar, it's hardly fair to compare the two.

If there's one department 2017 hasn't been shit on, it's the music, and that's true across all the genres.

How are they doing this? Why would you do this? Three albums in a year? All the songs are going to start flowing together in peoples heads and it'll all just start to sound the same.

So they're called Saturation I-III

Meaning they're literally saturating the market with their music

Check them out. I and II are fucking phenomenal and each have a different overall tone. I expect nothing less from III when it drops

Sorry my dude but that ship has sailed years ago. I have no desire to get back into hip hop.

Like, I dislike Kendrick Lamar. Safe to say I'm never going to be a hip hop fan again.

Personally, i grew to dislike pretty much any rock music made after like 2010. Not including shit like metal, punk, etc..

I mostly listen to metal, hip hop, jazz, funk, soul, and r&b these days.

Hip hop does really suck now, even this brockhampton guy people are bumming here isn't even good.

Tbf kendrick is alright, he gets boosted so much by white teenagers though, it's annoying. He's just a good lyrical rapper in a pile of shitty meme/mumble/hashtag rappers.

I dunno, try listening to prog/future house.

Rap is more accessible and varied than it's ever been. There are multiple cats out there making every type of rap possible and if you can't find something you like in it, you either don't like the genre or you're not looking very hard.

You can still seek out good hip hop, its basically at its peak as far as being the dominant genre. If you just give a blanket statement of not liking any hip hop nowadays then youre just not trying hard enough. Good lyrical rap isnt mainstream like it used to be but its definitely around in local scenes.

Only part I dont get is how tc said they dont even listen to older rap anymore. Then good for you but if you dont like any rap period then why are you even speaking on this?

Says the male Nikki Minaj.
...I don't know, I just felt like saying it.

Also my favorite type of "rap" was Reggaeton, which I still do listen to on occasion...so....eh.

Lol, cus of my ass.

I don't listen to any reggaeton so I can't really comment on it. I just know there are plenty of rap albums I've enjoyed a lot this year. I can't complain. None of it was mumble rap either. (Which I think is fine depending on the setting)

I have like 22,000 songs I just shove on shuffle and thus...my playlist.
Though it really likes certain songs...like...the chances of it playing them should be 1 in 22,000 but it always seems to play certain ones.
Also I spent my latter years of puberty in Puerto Rico...thus I got really into Reggaeton, hence it being the only type I still actively search out...on occasion.

Ah I gotcha. I never had any exposure to it. I know the typical baseline tho. Dun, da dun, da, dun.
