They don't like publicly acknowledging their past. The Nazis are a _very_ black eye for them, so they scrub any and all references to it. They have laws that forbid people from even mock-saluting. I don't blame them, either. I mean, the US barely acknowledges its colonial past as it is, and that was over 300 years ago. You're going to badger a country that's much older than that for scrubbing something that happened only 80 years ago?

Same reason that the USA tries to forget the Indian Relocation Act.

It's a dark part of their history with many moral wrongdoings that they don't want to associate themselves with. Germany still allows displays of them and such when protected as a form of art or something, but they censor the symbolism and such in things like games where it isn't protected.

There are also places that censor blood and violence towards humans for being too graphic or completely ban games for regional crime issues.

There's no conspiracy to hide the history behind a wall of silence, no one is pretending it didn't happen, and there's no "complete censorship" in "all media". Germans are probably better educated about the sins of their own country's past than we are.

That's not even entirely true, either. Nazi symbology is allowed in media under the context of art, science, research, or teaching.

That makes sense, thanks. I just always thought it was odd that you can't even use the name "Hitler" in German television or video games. But then again they used to change the color of blood too so maybe it's a bigger thing than just nazism.

I'd point out that Germany does actually make WW2 films: Das Boot, Stalingrad, Der Untergang (Downfall). Like UnholyMudcrab pointed out, section 86 (3) of the German Criminal Code allows the display of Nazi symbols if the goal is to "promote art or science, research or teaching, reporting about current historical events or similar purposes".
