Of course there are. Not all black people are the same. And hip hop is not as popular in other countries as it happens to be in many western nations. Like seriously, this is kind of obvious.

Also, not all rap is the same. The pedigree of hip hop is rich with history and culture. And all kinds of people have come in and out of that tapestry at various times.

It's really weird how against it he is.

It's less weird when you think about the cultural baggage that comes with those stereotypes, and the fear that in liking any of those things he's enabling people who uncritically consume those stereotypical representations of people like him, to treat him the way they treat other black people.

If not liking hip hop suddenly hid my blackness from the people who have given me shit for the color of my skin through high school and college, I'd have done it and not looked back. Truthfully, I kind of did that anyway, imagining that it made me less black and less deserving of criticism. It didn't actually change anything for me though, and eventually I had to come to the inescapable conclusion that I was deceiving myself, and that I was more than a little self-loathing.

Shit, growing up I knew black kids who listened to Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses and the such.

The older ones I work with listens or don't seem to mind country.

One black guy told me that as long as it's not a bunch of mindless screeching guitars and yelling they can deal with it... like with that satanic style music.

Hell this Mexican dude I work with loves Garth Brooks and tries to sing along despite him not knowing half the shit Garth is harping about.

Still each side of the building I work in fades into different styles of music as you walk through.
