That's more or less how I'd have reviewed Stick of Truth after playing it.

I went into playing that game expecting it to be bad (doubly so because I wasn't a fan of the combat mechanics at first), and it wound up being awesome. It was especially appealing because it felt funnier to me than the actual show has for years now - it gave me the impression that they've been mostly half-assing the show (except for maybe 1-2 episodes per season) for a long time, but put all of their effort and interest into developing the narrative of the game.

I've been hoping the new game lives up to that high standard, though I've been holding off on buying it until I could hear some reviews. The shitty marketing practices of the game industry has left me incredibly wary and jaded when it comes to pretty much any new release, but especially anything with a strong hype train or that is part of an established franchise.

To be fair, as much as I actually like Obsidian (and Black Isle before them), I'd be hard-pressed to actually think of any part of Stick of Truth that felt like something quintessentially Obsidian, or that NEEDED them to be the ones making the game.

Obsidian(and Black Isle)'s #1 strength has always been in their writing, but that's removed almost entirely from the equation if Matt and Trey are more or less writing the whole game themselves. At that point all that's really left is gameplay mechanics - which has always been something Obsidian has a history of stumbling over *cough*Alpha Protocol*cough*.

Went with Assassins Creed myself. I'd imagine this game will drop in price quick. Not because it's bad or anything but just because that's what happened with the first one IIRC.

Obsidian didn't make the story, though.

Stick of Truth was basically the opposite of how Obsidian has a history of operating. A lot of their games basically take someone else's game engine and improve on it, and deliver a stronger story because all of the old Interplay/Black Isle writers wound up in Obsidian after the cataclysm. Stick of Truth was basically them providing the gameplay mechanics for a narrative, setting, and gameplay ideas the South Park guys came up with.

Most of the positive score isn't coming from the contributions Obsidian brought to the table, it's more because it was pretty much the first South Park game ever that Trey and Matt actually had a ton of input on that consequently felt like something more than half-assed garbage.

When you take out everything other than the pure gameplay mechanics, it's not really all that interesting or worthwhile a game. I'd be tempted to say that it's far from their best game in that respect, but then again, as previously established, a lot of their games were piggybacking off someone else's game engine/mechanics anyway, so it's hard to point to any game (other than maybe Alpha Protocol) as being distinctly "Obsidian" in that sense.

I loved the game, but I doubt it would have felt all that much different if the mechanical side of things had been handled by someone like BioWare or Bethesda and not Obsidian.
