My brother and I were thinking about an old PC game that one of our friends had. By old, I mean this had to have been back in 1999 at the latest. Most likely 1996-98. Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of details because it's been so long. Here is what we can remember:

1. It's a PC game. To my knowledge, it's not on any other platform
2. It's a first person game (we think)
3. The main character is a HUGE dudebro type of character. It's a light hearted game
4. I think he may have been in college. He certainly seemed to be in the 19-23 age bracket.

Unfortunately, we can't really remember what you actually did in the game, or the plot or anything. We just remember walking around as the main character examining things. IIRC there was a point where you examine weed.

Anyway, I realize this is a huge long shot but does anyone have any idea what this game might be?

Eh, I dunno. The setting was like a college setting IIRC. It wasn't like some game where you went around beating people up or anything.

Yep, sounds like an adventure game. Not to be confused with action-adventure. Adventure games are games about acquisition. Pick up items with specific uses, gather information, etc. Puzzles are common in them as well. The era you're describing was a time where PC adventure games were very common.

Ah ok, well yeah that's exactly how I would describe it then. I'm wondering if I might be able to narrow down the search since I think the whole weed thing is correct. I would imagine that would make the game M rated back then right? I'll look into it.

Unfortunately, no. I was a kid back then, I'm talking 3rd-5th grade. I never really played it too much or got too far into the game. I don't think I could figure out how to advance in the game back then to be honest. What I've told you is about all we can remember.

Was it strictly mouse based or did you type text commands?

I think it was keyboard mouse type of thing. You could run around as the character and examine things with your mouse, etc.

I definitely don't remember typing in any text commands. I don't think I've ever played a game like that.

What do you mean?

It was a pretty bright, vibrant, trying to be funny type of game FWIW.

I'm pretty sure it was.

Also, in describing the main character, I'm pretty sure he was in shorts, wearing a Hawaiian type of shirt. The main color of his shirt was like dark yellow IIRC, and his hair was kind of...wild and brown

Kinda like this

Welp, I posted this on another board and someone immediately knew what game I was talking about. It's "Normality"

I got a few of the details incorrect but they figured it out anyway. Thanks for trying to help.

Man you were really doing detective work over there. All my search efforts were pretty much futile. Thanks for the help.

BTW, Normality is currently free on IndieGala. You need a Steam account to claim it, though.
