Didn't the original drastically underperform

This is what happens when you make a sequel to a 35 year old movie that also underperformed

It's unfortunate, but it makes sense really. Just like the original Blade Runner, it's a very slow moving noir kind of film. Which is why it's not a popular genre. Too bad though, it's a really good film. Watched it twice.

This shouldn't be a surprise. The first one was a bomb, too.

This is the reason we never got a Mega Man Legends 3 either.

People didn't know what it was. When I saw it there was a family with three young children. The kids got bored and fidgety about 20 minutes in. The mother finally told the dad "I'm just going to take them down to the arcade." The dad was clearly into the movie. About 30 minutes later the mother came back and said "Let's just leave. We'll get our money back."

And I get that. It wasn't for all of them. And getting your money back for a movie is a thing. I don't blame them. But they left their fucking garbage. All their soda cups, popcorn trays, and other trash. That was just rude.

With sequels they really need to make the first movies more available on streaming. I still think part of the reason Avengers did so exceedingly well was because the movies leading up to it were on Netflix at the time it came out. I know Blade Runner was on Netflix years ago, but probably would have helped to have it on there now, when they want people to be more familiar with the series. When was the last time the Final Cut was streaming anywhere that didn't require renting it specifically?

That's still not good and can still be considered a "bomb". Plus, we have to take into account the cost of marketing that's not included with its budget number.

It also doesn't take into account the fact that half the money is going to the Cinema's not the company that made the film.

because it's a sequel 35 years too late to a movie that was already a flop. It had no business getting made from a business perspective.

This, how they manage to secure a budget of 150million dollars is mind blowing to me. It's a terrible investment from a business perspective, but nontheless I am happy the movie was made.

So the sequel to a movie that was a flop also ended up flopping? Why is this surprising to people? No one cares about the Blade Runner franchise other than hardcore movie buffs. They call these cult classics for a reason. This is similar to how they made a prequel to the Thing and acted shocked when it bombed.

I saw it on Sunday in IMAX and the movie was fucking amazing.

Thing is, if my brother hadn't asked me to see it with him I probably would never have went. I never saw the original Blade Runner and had no idea what this one was about, and honestly from the marketing it felt like a movie where it was made for a fanbase that I was not a part of (like Star Trek or something).

Color me shocked. First one was a huge flop and after all this time only developed a small cult following, so they sink 150 million into a sequel?

No.
