I told him I was expecting to shell out closer to $1000. He said that's unnecessary unless I want a stupid good PC that'll last for eight years.

So since Black Friday is coming up and all that, I figured now is the best time to find deals. I know I can go to PC Parts Picker .com and choose what I want, but I don't know where to start or what I'm looking for.

I want to play games on high settings (whatever that means). I like to edit videos and download stuff. Watching movies. Video chat I guess.

Please advise.

Decide how high on the food chain you want to go for each part.

They were helpful.

Go with a 1080p build and you should be fine with $1000 budget.

What are other options besides 1080p build? And how many years would it last?

If you don't even know monitor resolutions or can't Google them, I don't know how much help I can be. 1080p is fine and budget friendly, the fact that you want to push it to 2K or 4K means your budget isn't really realistic, and you're going to fight every suggestion someone makes. I'm out.

BTW what's stopping anyone from purchasing a high end gaming PC and then upgrading from there? Price?

It's me.

Also: I built my PC for $87, and I get 1080p 4fps on Diablo 2.

Yeah it as a stick of Double Bubble and 3 dildos.

You can get away with $68 if you get the dildos in bulk.

You need a PSU. Also spending $150 on a case in a $500 build is nuts.
If you can afford to spend $1000, do that. You spend so much time on the computer that its well worth the investment to get an exponentially better system.
Also, at this point, wait for BF. And keep checking slick deals for deals on parts and even prebuilts. You can sometimes get a prebuilt for less than what it would cost to build.

Miners have killed GPU prices and semiconductor shortages mean price of RAM has basically doubled.

Short answer is it's going to be extremely hard to build anything good for less than $1000.

You are probably better off buying a Laptop. You can get an "okay" Laptop for about $1300 and you have portability and it'll last for about 4-5 years if you really stretch it.
