Really dug the lore but couldn't get into the gameplay (which is unfortunately one of the biggest obstacles for me with survival horror games)

My girlfriend and I watched season 1 of Channel Zero this weekend. It was really entertaining. Surprised by just how much quality was actually there and they had some legitimately chilling moments. We'll have to catch up on season 2 next.

Not 100% sure what to think of the ending

I've got A LOT of unanswered questions
-Why did the detective become a vigilante superhero? That seemed kind of out of left field. And why is he becoming the old man? Are they in a time loop?
-If Lil Slugger is s manifestation of guilt and Paranoia, why can he see ghosts? And why is he afraid of them?
-Why are those dolls alive? How does that weird guy fit into everything?

I do like the idea of Maroni and Slugger having the same purpose, that was really clever and the way he grew stronger with the Paranoia was effective, but a lot of the last couple episodes seemed sort of random

The last two episodes are pretty crazy. Let me see what I can do (or at least my take)

-Maniwa became completely obsessed with the case, effectively losing half of his mind. However, that partial insanity helped him endure the paranoia and escapism that plagued everyone else.
-After it was over, the strain on his mind was too much. Remember how he was the one who started piecing together the original old mans clues? Now thats his role; and his final lecture as well as the cartoon cat in the epilogue imply that this will eventually happen again barring a major societal shift.
-Lil Slugger feeds off paranoia and guilt, but his real essence is despair (contrasted with Maromis artificial hope/comfort) and a desire to escape the despair through any means necessary. Thats why he comes for the ghosts; thats also why they terrify him.
-Given how people are becoming more unhinged in the second half of the show and how Lil Slugger/Maromi is starting to warp reality (e.g. the cardboard world), its unclear how much with the dolls and otaku is real versus hallucinated. Of course, for Maniwas purposes, those are effectively the same thing.

Also, The Chief Returns is one of my favorite anime moments ever.

Oh shit that's a good point. It does really to into the theme of what's real and what's imaginary and how blurred those are. So I guess it could just be him figuring it out and explaining everything to himself in a way his breaking mind could handle.

Chief destroying the fake world was excellent but I honestly think Family Planning was my favorite episode. What a fantastic standalone subplot.

The gossip women was probably the low point for me

Happy Family Planning is probably the best episode. Who knew suicide pacts could be so hilarious? Plus seeing Lil Slugger freak the hell out was A+. I also agree Etc. is the worst episode.

Scariest episode to me is Mellow Maromi. It captures the heart of the shows horror.

American Horror Story: Cult has really, really lost me now.

They're doing that thing again where they abandon a cohesive story to go off on random dumb bullshit to completely change the direction of the show into something that people weren't as invested in.

I can understand in-fighting between the cultists and wanting to overthrow the leader. But doing it because they want to show off girl power? Spending an entire episode on backstory for a character who won't appear again? I just don't care about all of the women suddenly being brainwashed against the leader of the cult because of feminism! Maybe if they had an actually good reason to like any of about a dozen reasons I could come up with off the top of my head, but this is stupid.

They do this every season, I swear. It's like if you're going to get ice cream, excited to go there on the road. And then they just take a different turn and go, "I know you really like that ice cream, but I really want broccoli instead. So let's have some broccoli for dessert. Trust me. You'll love this broccoli, even though it's not what we talked about, but it's going to be great."

It's not great American Horror Story. I don't give a shit about your crappy divergence so you can tell your little story about this. You had me hooked with the last episode and then you dump me with this and I just don't care! Just because you say "I think it will be cool to tell this story." But it's not cool! It's never as cool as the idea you already had! Why can't you just keep going the same solid direction you are right now!?

Definitely pretty highly. Like an A-

I think at some points it does start to lose track of where it's going (and I think ETC really did hurt the series; it took away from the horror by lightening the impact of Slugger) but after a few episodes I was hooked.

I haven't seen any horror anime (unless you count Death Note, which I don't) so I don't have anything to really compare it too, but I did thoroughly enjoy it

Yeah I've heard Girl Next Door is pretty fucked up, I want to check it out. I agree Audition is good, but I think Dead Silence is pretty good as well, for what it is. Kinda campy but definitely above average. Don't really know anything about Loved Ones.
