This season's actually felt a little less consistent than the others to me personally, but when it's on point it's throwing out the best episodes in the series. Last night's ep was definitely one of them, so good.

it wasn't even just the twist ending that blew me away honestly. saw it coming from a mile away, anyway. but the structure and storytelling of the entire episode was done insanely well. and it was a surprisingly fresh and unique take on the entire premise of the show. very well done. this will easily go down as one of my top episodes. I'll have to watch it a bit more to decide if it dethrones my current favorite.

I had the twist figured quite a while back but the music drop was so perfect, and even gave me the confidence to be all like "called it" even before the pictures of evil morty appeared.

Absolutely brilliant episode structurally, thematically, so tightly written, amazing to look at. More inventive than ever. And hilarious too, I laughed out loud like five times in the opening scene alone ("You don't have to be a dick" "I think you know that's not true" being the highlight I'd say). Probably top 3 for the entire series. The way the storylines all meshed while being radically different (and yet featuring the same two characters, except not) was amazing.

Only thing I'd say - and it's not a problem for me, obviously - but that episode was totally inaccessible for new viewers, wasn't it? Like if you've never seen R+M before that episode would just be borderline inaccessible nonsense. Much more so than usual, I mean.

I figured the references to Brazil and Training Day would at least be accessible to movie buffs.

OK yeah it obviously uses a lot of pop culture references and familiar genre stuff to guide things along, but the very premise alone is kind of out there.

I was just imagining a couple of my friends who don't watch it watching just that episode, and I don't think it'd be the one that would make them "get" the show - even if it's one of my personal favourites in the series, if that makes sense. Best one for that is probably still...I don't know, maybe Total Rickall or The Microverse one.

Why would (non-simple) Ricks ever agree to work in factories? Why wouldn't they just get lesser people to do that or fully automate it because they're geniuses?

It's a social commentary. How the Ricks hated galactic government so they built the citadel... and became their own galactic government, complete with stratification of a ruling and a working class and the struggles between them.

I've been pretty meh on this season but yeah that episode was incredible. Not even because of the continunity elements, but it was just ridiculously solid AND THEN it had that on top. First episode this season that's really felt on the same level as the good S1/S2 stuff. I love it.

See that's what I thought, but we so rarely ever see the other members of the family in different universes while this citadel seemed to only have Ricks and Mortys seemingly living there

The ending was cool but the Simple Rick bits were legendary

so after some days have passed I have a few weird regrets about this latest episode. namely they did a good job at introducing so many awesome characters it feels kind of lame that we'll probably never see any of them again in any substantial capacity. granted, this is because a bunch of them died. but for example cop rick was really interesting, and it feels like a waste if his character just disappears after that. or even worse if we just get some cameo of him dying in the background during the next big battle.

They do that in lots of the good episodes. But they consistently prove that they can just conjure up another dozen great one-off characters anytime they want.

The show doesn't really do a good job with recurring characters anyways. Outside the main cast, they aren't very good. It's basically just Bird Person and Evil Morty if you want to count him. He's been great conceptually both times but we still know nothing about him. I also felt bummed when say Krombopulos Michael or The Vindicators got killed off, but the show isn't really interested in revisiting them anyways then I suppose it doesn't matter.

That said. I am still holding out hope that ONE DAY we will see the glorious return of Abradolph Lincler.

Tammy basically became a completely different character in the S2 finale, and I actually forgot she was in another episode in between that and her first showing, so I guess I'm just not a fan. It was an interesting twist though.
