I never got told that, When i've been sick with a flu I just chilt in my room watching movies and playing games, throwing up or burning hot doesn't mean I can't use my hands or stare at the tv.

Nah, video games were relaxing and helped ease whatever discomfort/pain I had. Can ignore the fact that I feel like shit if I get into a game enough.

Yes. I've heard this from my mum. Lol.

When I was very young, whenever I'd fall ill, I was expected to lay in bed quietly. No TV, music or any distraction. I was just supposed to "rest".

Man..those were awful times.

Considering my parents had to stop me from going to school sick, that wouldn't have worked on me. Would've been more like trying to bribe me with getting to play video games to get me to stay home.

I tell this to my kids when they have a bad cold or the flu. Rest helps them heal and won't make faking sick appealing. However, when they have a stomach bug or something along those lines I let them play. They are suffering enough so I let them have fun.

I always thought that was moronic. It's "old people" logic that completely dismisses the ability of distraction to make somebody feel better. I can see if it's something really intense or that involves movement, but I fail to see how your recovery will be negatively affected by something relatively calm and engrossing. The same dickheads who agree with "no school, no games" are probably the same people who equate beating a child to making them respectable...

Depends on how sick they are. If it's just a cold or something yeah, go ahead and play. If they're really sick or contagious with something like chicken pox, go to bed and keep your hands to yourself.

Some games are mindless and require that you sit there an click a confirmation button. Some are worse, like FFXII. Plus, being sick might allow you to perceive a pile of dung as being good, like half the "humor" in "Tales of Graces f."

I honestly don't know if I ever had this rule as a kid because I was almost never sick. If I was, it was usually something where I actually couldn't like a concussion or running an extremely high fever that made me not want to play games.

Now that I am adult I don't care, I'll just do whatever I feel like doing when I am sick.

When I was a kid, it was only asked why I wasn't sleeping. Simple, I couldn't fall asleep on command like that, and wasn't tired. Just sick and in need of rest. So, lie back and do something relaxing and simple, and oh hey! Reading something or playing a game fit the bill nicely.

No, the only real rule in regards to being sick was that being sick could be proven? Have just a tummy ache or you "hurt all over?" You're going to school today, and then we'll take you to the doctor if you still feel bad afterward (or if you actually throw up during class). Already showing signs such as fever, colored phlegm, or so forth? Doctor's office for half the time you were at school anyway, and THEN get to stay home and do whatever.

So yeah... Not a thing to be abused, but not a thing to say "No video games for you today either!"

People confused about why their parents said this probably aren't parents themselves.

No, your mother did not earnestly believe that your illness precluded you from moving your thumbs to press buttons on a controller - she was trying to make your time at home boring and miserable so that you'd go back to school faster and not get the impression that illness (either real or faked) meant you'd have a good time at home.

Doesn't that encourage kids to go to school sick, though? Certainly would've encouraged me to fake being not sick if I was feeling bad =/

D. Being sick can make you weak so you can't go anywhere but that doesn't mean you can't play video games for example. Also it's best you stay at home when sick anyway as then you don't risk passing it onto others as much.

Fun fact: Not every parent is the same and no parent is perfect as being one.
I also didn't know you are a parent.

Potentially. I'm not defending the practice, just pointing out the rationale behind it.

When I'm sick to the point where I'm going to throw up soon, I can't focus on gaming or any web browser at all. But after a while, I get better and then can.

Being home sick from work/school just means you're staying home to prevent getting others sick. You don't feel like utter shit for the whole day.

But then again, I'm very rarely sick (to the point of throwing up i.e. not counting headaches) in the first place. Last Tuesday was the first time I've thrown up since I've moved to my current apartment, and I've been living here since the start of 2016.
